Primers And Pregnancy?
Just got done looking at a house that a couple are getting ready to move into. All the woodwork in the house is stained very dark brown. The client wants the trim painted white. I'm gonna sand lightly and prime with a good oil-based primer (zinsser cover) followed by 2 coats of white semigloss.
Like the thread topic states, the wife is expecting in November. My question is will it be safe for the mother to be to be exposed to the primer smell. There is alot of trim, crown and base to be done and will probably take a week alone just to sand and prime. She is a stay at home mother. Thanks! Lance |

Re: Primers And Pregnancy?
I would advise against it.
Probably won't hurt anything, but wouldn't want to take on that liability myself. |

Re: Primers And Pregnancy?
Id use an alchol base primer to go over ANY poly stain, cuts sanding in half.. however, no matter what you do no, it's not harmful to her or the baby however... heightened sense of smell will be harmfull to you.

Re: Primers And Pregnancy?
No scientific evidance here but I cant imagine it not being somewhat harmful.

Re: Primers And Pregnancy?
Yes yes, I don't "flesh out" enough, my wife tells me that daily.
Lots of open windows, i've had customers complain about the smell of oil five days after the job is done, with proper ventalation it won't HARM anyone... just stinks, and preggie women have more smell zones in their nose than a dog... so.... You can get low odor primers, and paints, but she will still smell it. I had one preggie woman run me out of a house for running low voc latex, due to the smell alone.

Re: Primers And Pregnancy?
Both myself and my business partner worked as painters for a remodeling contractor while we were pregnant and both of our kids turned out fine. (even better than fine...my 7 yr old son can solve complex math problems while I sit there stumped) He was born with all ten fingers and ten toes and no health problems at all and I was exposed to fumes on a daily basis. Just open windows when and where you can and you'll be fine. Like the others said you're more likely to upset her keen sense of smell than actually harm her or the baby.

Personally, I'd take a hike. If ANYTHING were to happen to that child, your fault or not, just your defense fees would break you. A judgement against you would run into 10's of M's. Ask anybody in the chemical industry. VOC's are chemicals and you will be asked to provide documented levels, without them you're toast.
