Prime Sound Exterior Surface.

Have customer that insists on priming his western red cedar that has already 1 paint sytem applied [Primed and two finish 6 years old]. Paint is in good condition: No flaking, no blisters, and firmly adhered to substrate.
My proposal is to clean exterior thoroughly, light sand, and apply two coats of California Velvet Exterior.

Is there any benefit to applying an acrylic prime coat to an already sound surface?

I can think of no reason to prime other than the fact that your customer insists upon it. And the customer is always right . The primer, while unnecessary, certainly won't hurt anything, so give the customer what he wants and charge accordingly.

Thanks for the replies. After some research, come to the conclusion that there is no benefit to prime sound surface, and there may be a disadvantage to adding an un-necessary extra coat.
Western Red Cedar Association has some good info.

you'd prime - if you wanted to radically change the color. Like going over a deep red with a light tan. In that case you might try tinting the primer to the color you want - and hopefully one topcoat provides a perfect coverage. What would you sand, not all the siding I hope?

Give her what she wants - pressure wash, scrape, sand, spot prime wood with oil, caulk - then one coat of a tinted exterior latex primer, and then one coat of california topcoat. Who knows you may discover something interesting about the final product.

When I was 18 I made the mistake of working to the owners specs. All I heard was complaints: Lesson learned - Do the job the only way/ the right way and you will sleep soundly while the customer admires your craft.
