Longer than wallpapering.
Depends on the prep, like measuring and taping straight lines. How long will it take you to do that? The painting and pulling tape is pretty quick. You should be able to do it in a day. Without a base coat. If its 8' walls and you're only doing the top half of that, it'll go quickly.

Charge by square foot, and make sure all supplies are covered. Blue tape is expensive, but a necessity. I charge a minimum of $6-$8 per sq ft for vertical striping and this does not include the basecoat or any faux application to the stripes--the basecoat and any faux are separate and additional.
All of my faux finishing is on a square foot base and I make adjustments to the pricing when I do my estimate to cover supplies: Figure out what you're supply costs are, what hourly rate you charge, how long you estimate the project will take, and put this into a square foot charge.
I can usually do on 8X10 wall in about a day with an assistant--this does not include the base coat, only stripes.

Me and my brother (pro painter) did my baby room in about a day I think there was about 40 LF of walls. We did the bottom half UNDER the chair rail doing above would have been a real pain. The thing that took the most time was caulking the tape lines so the paint would not bleed under the tape because the texture allows it to bleed.

Bob...i am going to strip over a chair while stripeing over the chairrail i'm one talented lady!!...lol. know how long it will take me to do the base coat...just don't know how long it would take to tape out all those stripes. above the chairrail is 5' high and its about 40 ft long.
never do faux finishes however feel this is something we can try and we are kind of slow right now.red canary you say 80 sq ft in one day, so it should take us about 2 1/2 days??...thanks

Basepaint it. Run two peices of 2 inch tape side by side (Your 4 inches) and probably a 1 inch over the seam of the tapes. Seal the tape or just roll the strips again using your basecoat so that any bleed is that color. Let dry. Then roll the wall with the second color. Pull the tape. Your done. If this takes you longer than a day(after basecoat drys), I'd find another career! Your talking 200 sq. ft of painting. If you mark the wall every 8 inches top and bottom, then put a strip of 2 inch on each side, your set up shouldnt take that long. IMO.

Don't you have to adjust the width of your stripes slightly based on the width of the wall?? ex. if you wall is 42" wide you can't have 10 - 4" stripes and then a 1/2 stripe.

I have not painted many stripes, but when I have used a laser level mounted on a tripod for a horizontal stripe and I would think that it would speed up the set up time. The tripod I used has levels on it so you can be sure it is square, then once it is set up in the middle of the room you can move the beam and the nice part is you can see the entire line as you taped it so you do not have to worry about it being crooked anywhere.
