Pricing Question
I know that there are alot of threads on quoting jobs and how everyone does it weather by the square foot or by the time it takes. But How much would you charge to paint a average bedroom say 10 x 10 8' ceilings one small window, with no trim to paint, two coats of paint.
Thanks
Joe

Whatever price you charge, make sure to add a "small job" premium - at least 50% more than your usual rates.

Its a small job. Ive got 2 guys 1 hour driving time. Setup is 1 hour. Small prep is 1 hour. Painting is 5 hours. Teardown/cleanup is one hour. That jobs going to cost $600.00 + matierials. Lets call it $650.00 and for that price I will end up painting the base, crown, door and window at "no cost", the homeowners will be thrilled they recived the freebie.

Including ALL materials and labor, I would charge between $400-$500. I use good paint and supplies. And I charge a fair rate.
It really comes down to whether or not you use good paint/supplies and what you personally charge per hour. I've seen some guys who charge $25/hr....and I've seen some charge $50/hr.

Are ceilings included? If so, are the ceilings going to be the same paint as the walls? How much furniture?
Walls are only 320 sq.ft. You can get it done with 2 1/2 gallons of paint. 2 rolls tape max. Not much to invest in. Plastic maybe, for the furniture if you're doing ceilings. 2 tubes caulk, max.
Oops, i'm going off topic again. Walls only, 200 labor, ceiling included, another 100 labor. No extra charges, no extra overhead, just materials.

10x10 room with 8ft ceilings and no trim. Ok thats 320sq ft of wall so its two gallons of paint for two coats. what about reapirs? ok say there are a few nail holes and a few peices of trim around that window and door that need caulk just for kicks.
Two Gallons Cashmere My cost $26 give or take =round up $60
tube of caulk $2
Scoop of spakle $2
Time (labor) 6 hours x $25 - 50 hr I will use $25 $150
Gas to job and back $10
one days insurance $10
Wear on Brush (really) $1
Roller cover (3/8 nap soft woven sw) $3
Tray liner $1
towels or rags$2
Misc tool and tarp wear $10
So if you are paying an employee this is your cost for this room
$251 without doing the ceiling or the trim!!!!!!!
if you are the owner and you get it done in 6 hours you made $150 today for 6 hrs work.
If you are the owner and you pay an employee to do this you need to mark it up to $300 to make 20% on your investment
Guys am I forgetting anything? I guess I am not adding in the time to estimate it, bill it, the paperwork or any of the accounting behind it. So in the end that little room could be $500 dollars by the time you add ceiling and trim if you wanted that too.

ARRRR matey ....you forgot to rape, pillage, and plunder~
**ok in all seriousness...here's a few tips~ instead of listing it as "misc tool and tarp wear"...which is(for a lack of better terms)weird, just add all the materials together and add 10-20%.
**oh, you forgot the gas for sitting idle at dunkin donuts, the extra look at the hot girl walking down the sidewalk, the extra trip to the van because you forgot your putty knife the first time, turning up the radio...raising your hourly rates might eliminate all the unnecessary billing.

How about overhead?
Your fixed cost for running your business divided by the amount of jobs you can do in a year. Who pays for your fax machine, internet access, your truck insurance, truck payment, cell phone bill the list goes on....
How about profit?
The money your business makes after paying the job cost and overhead.

One thing I dont think has been mentioned yet...is the room empty or full of stuff? If it's empty, I'd charge $650 plus materials and tell the customer it will be done before noon. If I'm moving a bed/dresser/desk/relocating stacks of junk/etc., I'd add at least $100 to the labor charge.

I think this one is pretty cut and dry.
It has formerly been established that it costs $30 to paint a bathroom. This room is only slightly larger than the typical bathroom. Fifty bucks, max.
