Pricing

When pricing by the sq ft do you guys normally include the paint, rollers and brushes in the price. Or is it labor then materials.

Im just getting into this charging by the sq ft, I have been working time and materials but want to change that.

How much different would your pricing be to paint exterior, say a deck, than inside?

Thanks

why not charge by hour and material that way you shouldn't loss. also the faster and the better the quality of your work the more you charge. good luck

Because I feel like charging by the sq ft will give the customer a better more definite idea of the final price. And if they have more things they want to add on a sq ft pricing will better equip them to get a rough idea of how much it would cost before they call me or talk to me about it.

Honestly, if you are talking residential re-paints, I don't see how a sq. ft. price could possibly even begin to include 1/10th the potential production rate busting issues involved in occupied re-paints

As I do sq. ft. to figure materials, I do have some avg. type figures that might almost work
But the second I try to apply them to the next bid, there's an incontinent dog or 10,000 mini gnomes or the Compleat Collection Of TV Guides 1972-1998 that somehow "we didn't have time to move"...the Escher Stairway, the painted shut windows, the 18" valley you have to work in between the wall and all the furniture piled up in the middle of the room....

New Construction I understand is a bit different, and it's more likely to work for you
Maybe Apt. Re-paints too...but I think a room price would be better

They won't need a "more definite idea of the final price" if you actually give them a price

Charging by the square foot (floor or wall) only works if all houses are the same (production) and you have a handle on your job time and costs.
What happens when you quote x per square and walk in and find 9 foot doors, fully cased windows, major prep, etc?
Price should only come after you and the customer have discussed and decided what is needed and why you are the person to do it. There are several good posts on painttalk that you may want to read.

That's what change orders are for
They will kind of get the idea anyway when they know how much it was for the rest of the house
Besides, like I said, repainting Jr.'s empty bedroom after he moves out is waaaaaaay different then repainting Aunt Hagatha's kitchen
Haggy's could be 1/3 the sq. ft. and take 3X as long
