Prestaining Cedar Shakes
Anyone out there have a good production rate for staining cedar shakes before they're installed. these are the typical relatively smooth shakes. I have 20 squares to complete. Haven't done this in about 8 years so i really have nothing better than a guess to work off of.

Not sure how someone elses production rate is going to benefit you.
Never did understand that question. Maybe I'm missing something. If so, I need to know what I'm missing. Tom Rohland, Jr. Ranger Painting & Pressure Cleaning, Inc. Lake Mary, Florida |

Re: Prestaining Cedar Shakes
I've asked similiar questions many times Tom. What I am trying to find is a refrence point to see if my figures are in line or way outta whack. I totally understand what you are saying... An experienced crew will do something much faster and probably better than an inexperienced crew. However I think it's still a valid question if it's being used as a guideline and not a rule.
My prefinish factories would charge me about $50 a square to prefinish those shakes. That's labor and material. I doubt you could do it at this cost, but they have the facilities and equipment setup to do it fast! Have you considered hiring a prefinish factory? |

Re: Prestaining Cedar Shakes
Tom, just thought I'd check with you guys. Seeing as all I'd have to go with otherwise would be a guess. By the way thanks for your help.
Grumpy, yeah there's no way I could come close to that price. I was going to have to construct a few racks etc. I've done the work before and it goes fast, but that was ages ago and never kept track or production rates. Looks as though the customer is going to choose a different product based on a lower price. A prefinish factory was the original plan but that fell through at the last minute. I just provided the builder a price in the event the customer still wanted the cedar shakes. |

Re: Prestaining Cedar Shakes
here's what we figured out. 2 guys are able to dunk and brush 1200 shakes in an 8 hour day. At my price that's roughly 4-5 times the price of Grumpy's pre-finish contractor, but hey, I'll take what i can get.

Re: Prestaining Cedar Shakes
Phinsher...just wondering how that Cedar Shake Dip and Brush Production rate of - 1200 shakes in an 8 hour day ultimately worked out? We are considering a 45- square CS project and I still haven't been able to get a good number on the number of shakes in a bundle. Not sure if you were able to get an answer remember approximately how many pieces you had on that 20-square project. Thanks for the help!
