Prep Teams?

Does anyone have a prep team? I'm trying to build one now...

What I mean is a team who goes into a new construction and gets it ready for me... I just go and shoot/cut and roll

And summer guys who scrape, sand and get a exterior ready while I finish another job.

Anyone have any luck with this, or am I just dreaming....

I have thought about this for along time, never tried it. Mostly for out doors though.

Re: Prep Teams?

this is pretty common in my area

the only way to have success is obviously to train them yourself, no matter what they know from the past- your way or the highway

also, having a lead guy who really can take charge, even if it's just 2 or 3, is crucial because we all know once they do 3 or 4 jobs, they're quality might start to head south and then come the hour lunches and the complaining about pay

Re: Prep Teams?

I do mostly new construction, it is the only way to go. When I worked as a sprayman/foreman I had several 2 man crews that went in and and did "first prep" (caulk, sand, vac and mask windows) then I would spray primer and trim and they went to next house. They would come back and do "second prep" (mask trim and remove doors) I go in and spray finish, they clean up and done! I could finish 3 houses easily 5 pushing it, a week.
Now that I am on my own and 1 helper I still use this method, just more of the prep myself!

This is what pruduction paint contractors do. Its like an assembly line. You can call it Factory painting. Usually same colors with the same builders in a cookie cutter method, but it works great. I see alot of that here. There is one big contractor here that has about 16 trucks and thats all he does.

Re: Prep Teams?

I used to do tons of new work, basicly wont touch it anymore. But when i was heavy in it, i tried the prep crew only, with no luck, yeap hard to beleive you can't train someone to putty a nail whole or run a caulk gun, but i found it much more productive for me to use only true professionals, to do everything. imo

I think finding helpers that work out good, actually comes down to finding, people who actually care about their work.

goodluck

I've done it once or twice.. but like Dave said... hard to find people that WILL. ONE dude, was kickarse.... litteraly, but all he wanted to do was caulk, dam good at it, but that was all he would do.
