Porch Staining Issue
I installed a Mahogany T&G porch floor and Cypress T&G porch ceiling for a client about a month ago as part of a larger project. We specifically state in our contract that we don't stain but do provide our clients a list of companies who do. The client took several weeks to contact the first such company who immediately told them that the it didn't matter what he did to the floor that it wouldn't last because it had been exposed to the elements. They were also told that the porch ceiling couldn't be stained because gravity would be working against them. Are both of these statements true and, if so, what are our options (i.e. do we have to redo one and/or the other)? Also, do you have a recommendation for oil vs. urethane stain?

Re: Porch Staining Issue
My first thoughts are you are not liable because:
Did you tell them to find a painter pronto or the materials could/would be damaged? If not, you might want to do that in the future. |

AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!
That wood can be finished just fine, exposed or not. Good heavens, do they think it's going to last forever with one treatment anyway? Very often it's a good idea to let some woods age for a short period of time. Gravity can be a b*tch but it doesn't prohibit a good contractor from staining a ceiling. What dorks! ![]() Celeste

Re: Porch Staining Issue
Yeah, what a bunch of crap
Take that painting contractor off your list *He has a point it should have been finished a while ago, but it's a lie that nothing will work now *He has a point that gravity can be a PITA when doing ceilings, but it's a lie that it can't be done Say Buh-Bye!

Re: Porch Staining Issue
Where are you? I'm fairly certain I can get you a very qualified wood care professional that will do an incredible job.

Re: Porch Staining Issue
I think they didn't want to do the job.Washing with Cabot wood cleaner and sanding will take care of any problems from weathering.Idea is to get rid of resins that have come to the surface and to open pores so the product will penetrate.

Re: Porch Staining Issue
Stay away from bleach products. Use a two step cleaning/prep process. Apply a high quality, semi-transparent oil based finish. Quick clean and maintenance coat every two years (longer if porch is protected from sunlight). The ceiling will last a long time. Your painter is definitely either a) not skilled in wood work or b) doesn't want to be bothered.
