What needs to be fixed? Texture or the sheetrock?

Re: Popcorn Ceilings

Wet down the texture around the area that needs to be repaired...spray bottle should be sufficient for the area you mentioned; it'll keep the dust down if nothing else. Scrape off the texture without digging ALL of it out. It's okay to leave the base (1/16 to 1/8) of the texture on. If you don't leave it you end up with a sharp line underneath, even after a heavy coat of texture. HO may not notice it, but you will. Tape seams as you will, and spray. That small of an area I'd be tempted to try the can, make sure you close the area in. Spray goes everywhere you don't want it to. I've used Homex for orange peel match, but haven't tried it for popcorn. I tried the paint brush 'dab' method once. Once.

Re: Popcorn Ceilings

The spray can patch for popcorn is the biggest joke there is. On the side of the can it tells you that the contents of the can empty quickly. That is like saying the surface of the sun is kinda warm. The can literally empties in under 2 seconds. How they expect you to control the texture/pattern is beyond me.

I felt like I was on Candid Camera.

You could try renting or buying a hopper/gun, or a texture machine (graco) from Home Depot. They sell bags of popcorn texture also...at least in my area.
