Polyurethane Top Coats
Hello painters, I got a question. It's cold up here in alaska now. I usually spray outside or tent up when I have to spray and usually use a binks cup/spray gun for clear coats on cab doors and cabinets prior to installing. I have an airless but never used it with a finish tip or urethane. I can tent up and mask the kitchen and vent through a window if I have to. My airless is a 190es. How much mess will it make in such an operation indoors? Do I need to mask the cieling? walls not in proximity to cabinets? (painted but no fixtures) Any tips would be a help. Wondered how you pros do it.

Re: Polyurethane Top Coats
I prefer using an airless over an HVLP for every spray application except for Painting Cars and Multi-Spec.
the airless seems to put less overspray in the air. when you spray polly it doesnt matter what sprayer you use, you will need to cover everything but the ceiling - unless you are a bad sprayer, then cover the ceiling too. |

Re: Polyurethane Top Coats
I use an airless, and have had no problems with a common sense masking of surrounding surfaces.

Re: Polyurethane Top Coats
OH thanks for the reply.. Can poly be thinned so as to use less pressure? I used some gym floor poly (for hardness?) on the window boxes and base and closet/pantry shelves but I brushed that. It seemed to be ok. I did air spray this same product earlier in the year on a cabinet job that looked good. Is there any clean up issues with the poly in the airless? Will regular thinner take care of the airless cleanup ok? Which spray tip size is best for poly?

Easy to clean. Fine Finish tip is the tip for you. Why are you using gym floor poly? You can get great finishes now with h20 poly or oil poly.
Mask everything off and vent through a window. Not sure about gym poly, but check the can to see if it is explosive....if so shut off the pilot lite on the furnace. Vapor is heavier than air and will settle down w/o you knowing and BANG!!! |

Re: Polyurethane Top Coats
Thanks, The ignition isnt an issue as the boiler is direct vented and located out in the garage/hangar. I picked up a 311 tip at columbia (ouch) I call it gym floor but its Pro Finisher Poly (The Home Depot) for all wood projects. It claims to be a "hard protective finish" ..fast drying etc. It seems to perform ok. I can block off the kitchen easily, mask the floors and spray the cabs. The doors and drawers I think I will spray out in the hangar. Mostly I was worried about the mess/over spray...it seems doable.
Thanks for the reply. |
