Poll: Hand Scraper Of Choice? I Use 4 Proprep & 2 Wagners

So much crap on the market, intruiged by those thick swedish steel scrapers, similar to the wagners but over 1/8" thick blade, $20-30 for the handle and blade is a little pricey.

I use the proprep large channel scraper ( 1x2" rectangle with one half-round edge) and the wood handle wagner with the triangle blade for bevel siding faces and other flat stuff.

The proprep small channel blade (long skinny 1/2" wide rectangle with one half-round end) and the teardrop wagner for moldings and little curvy stuff.

The proprep crescent moon skinny blade (a must have) for inside corners, caulk lines, perpendicular transitions, tub surrounds, etc. That and a flat edge screwdriver just kills for removing failed caulk around corners and such. Careful letting the helper get ahold of this, can cause some serious gouging in the hands of an idiot.

I take my bench grinder onsite and plug it in on the grass for sharpening, hand files are a waste of time.

I hate to admit that I have way too much experience scraping paint. So questions about my answers are welcome. If your paint store doesn't have proprep scrapers they are lackin', let em know! they are badass...

Anyone else care to chime in with their preferences?

I love the Sandvik scraper ( orange handled swedish ones). They're hefty enough so you can bang on the wood to loosen the old stuff up and they work great for straightforward scrpaing. We do a lot Victorians here in San Francisco so we scrape a LOT! and our lead laws are so restrictive that we have to be real careful when sanding.

I also like the pro-prep range for the fiddly bits.

if you don't have at least four different scrapers and know when to use each one you can't possibly be efficient.... I've seen cats using 5 in 1s to scrape, lmao...

the same company that makes the silent paint remover has some very pricey yet very thick and wicked looking swedish scrapers... that's what I was most curious about...

I think the wagner triangle blade is the best for post stripper and heat gun on heavy blistered patches (that dry lake bed lookin' stuff) and the pro prep large channel for the loose potato chip failin' paint...

You can do the work of three helpers if you learn how to get efficient with a bucket full of different scrapers...

sounds like we do a similar sort of work, the old, old houses certainly are a specialty trade... hey man, get cho post number up to 20 so you can receive private messages, I'd dig networkin' with ya...

those 2 1/2" carbides with the palm grips do have their place, that belongs on the list.
I work in seattle, similar lead laws and lots of old houses with lots of scraping... used 120 (no typo) tubes of caulk on one 1902 house 3 years ago, now that's gentrification baby!!!

have you tried the mini sandviks with the three little cherry tomato lookin' blades... work better than 3-4 different propreps?

only thing I don't like about the propreps is the mounting screws, easy to strip and then it's done for...

I haven't seen the mini sandviks, at least not that i remember. I do remember when the pro prep first came out you could get a great set of 2 handles and 6-8 blades. Haven't seen that since but it was great on victorians.
