Pipe fence paint job question

I have 5000' of four rail metal pipe fence that was painted with SW DTM oil based paint 2 years ago. Part of the fence was primed and painted with SW DTM Acrylic 7 years ago. The water based Acrylic has retained it's gloss while the oil based oxidized within one year. My question is : has anyone tried painting over the oil based DTM with the acrylic DTM without stripping or sand blasting the paint. The oil based paint is in good shape. Just looks like heck!!

DTM is for metal and now you can use a finish paint, I would think oil based would be preferred but if the latex is holding a better shine you may want to go with that. Ask your SW rep what paint to top coat over these DTM's.

If it's in good shape you shouldn't have a problem going over it. Of course I say that as long as you've already washed it down.

The thing about most oil products is that they will lose their gloss retention quicker than a water base paint will. Now the paint sounds like it's in great shape but has just lost it's shine? I'll bet it gets tons of sunshine doesn't it?

Use a urethane if you are looking for gloss and color retention along with corrosion resistance.

ICI/Devo - Devthane 389H Alipatic Urethane Gloss Enamel is an excelent product
