Paper Over Paneling
Hanging textured, paintable paper over paneling. Skimming the joints with mud.
What would you'nz use as a "slippery" primer on the paneling? It's not the thick paper made to span gaps, just heavily textured. Paneling hung on studs, nothing behind it. There aren't any big holes, but what if I run into some? Thanks in advance.. Joseph Whome |

Re: Paper Over Paneling
Mr. Whome,
Is it that groovy '70s paneling? I usually scuff sand and BIN that stuff, though oil primer can work too Regards, Mr. Shifte

Re: Paper Over Paneling
I normaly would skim over and then prime with an oil primer. As far as the holes i would fill with wood filler if they were substantual sized. Small nail holes i would of filled when skimming.

Re: Paper Over Paneling
Already sanded and starting skim on the grooves and butt joints.
I'm working for Mr. cantyoujust. My humble opinion is that the regular textured paper requires skimming the grooves. The "base" paper, made to bridge gaps doesn't need it. However, Mr. cantyoujust disagrees and to prove it, went to lowes where the "decorator lady" told him it just needs to be cleaned. No primer necessary. I know Mr. CYJ personally, so it's a "friends" job. Cantyoujust must be a very common name cuz I know lots of them. Thanks for the tips on primer. Just want to seal in the mud and leave a suface that will let go of the paper later. Will probably go with oil since I need to prime parts of the subfloor and inside cabinet doors. Joewho? uuhh, hi mom. |

You already said you're working for Mr. Cantyoujust, and the paintlady designer gal said this or that... As what the job's worth to Mr Cant.., if you can crank it out and make wages, DO IT. No guarantee, No warranty. r |

Re: Paper Over Paneling
On one wall I used some cheapo semi-gloss and the rest used sw sizing. No problems with either.
Good thing I skimmed the walls. Not just the butt joints, but all the grooves. There is nothing about the paper to indicate it would go over voids, even though Mrcantujust insisted that it would. It doesn't and he's happy with the end result. Just another case of wishful thinking on his part and extra work on my part. |
