I know of a manufacturer that sells a TON of product to do vinyl siding. They've not had a problem that I am aware of. Basically you can modify 100% acrylic with special organo-metallic adhesion promoters. The coating is also formulated to expand and contract with the vinyl siding.

Important: DO NOT PAINT IT DARKER THAN WHAT IS THERE! Also, no matter how good you think you have it covered... do 2 coats!

You need to pressure wash... make sure that you get rid of all chalking and any mold, modew, bacteria...

Obviously this post is not all inclusive... Good Prep... 100% Acrylic!
In addition to the chemists viewpoint, my practical experience with SW vinyl siding paint has always been good. Found that it actually sticks better to faded siding (after cleaning). Double 4" is less likely to warp that straight 6".

When vinyl is hung, the nails are not pounded tight, all the cuts are loose too because the vinyl has to float to compensate expansion and contraction. If hung correctly, you can go a little darker than the original color, just not really dark colors.

Re: Painting Vinyl

Just finished one a couple months ago. Either use a similar or lighter color 100% acrylic or SW vinyl safe tints. We used the Duration standard color and it came out great. Duration is self priming so we used ONE coat after a very thorough cleaning.

A few words of caution - Lots of nooks and cranies, seams, etc. - price accordingly. It took a more paint and more time to keep the holidays down. Altogether it was cheaper than residing the house with new vinyl. We have noticed very little joint expansion but it was a cool March when we did it. I don't think I would do a large area until fall. A repaint in the summer would probably look like sripes when the cooler months came around and would be sure to get call backs from the HO.

Vinyl was 18year old extremely faded blue that would not have been able to be sold if they didn't do something to it. We estimated this would buy them 5-7 years before a repaint or new vinyl so it was definitely worth it.

Re: Painting Vinyl

XIM has a bonding primer out that is made for plastic and vinyl. Cleans up with Xylene so must be nasty stuff. have never used it myself. Sherwin Williams should be able to get you a Reps # to talk to.
