Painting Tile Backsplash
Never done it, I have standards.
That will soon change though due to an important customer's needs. Scuff the surface apply alkyd bonding primer, topped with SW All Surface Enamel semi~gloss using a 4" mohair cover. I don't want to spray. Sound good?

I would go industrial.
Specifically on the primer. |

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
Boy, I would have to look them up. Years ago I painted a stand up shower stall with Devoe Tile Clad( I think thats what it was. That was in probably '92)
I was very impressed with the stickabilty. It did fail a bit where I hadn't cleaned good enough, like on soap scum. But I was a knowitall kid at the time

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
I have done this once, I used ICI gripper for primer, its latex but it sticks to stuff better then some alkyds. Then I top coated with ICI Devflex waterborne, it is holding up as far as I know. My first choice would have been to use an epoxy, but that wasnt possible.

Then again, maybe there's a reason we've all done this only once

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
check out midwest chemicals. I did a old asbestos floor in their porcelain enamel paint. It is used as a shuffelboard!!! Held up great!!!! Best sprayed with an hvlp but I assume you could roll it. Their products are phenomenal!!!! My website has some examples. www.traditionspainting.com I've done countertops, bathtubs, tile, floors, etc.

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
i would prime with SW bonding primer. it's really good
i would consider finishing with SW industrial enamel. apply with a 4" foamy. coverage blows with a foam roller and you will need 2-3 coats, but it's probably your best bet being that you don't want to spray. |

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
XIM makes some really good bonding primers. I think UMA is the one to use on the tile.

Re: Painting Tile BacksplashQuote:
Yeah I have used their bonding primer on wall tile after abrading the tile with a palm sander. It seemed to have adhered very well. Nobody wants to paint tile but sometimes its what the customer wants/needs so we may as well give it to them. Or you could upsell them to a retile. Probably wouldn't cost that much more than the primer, paint, and two coats of painting. |

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
Hey guys, I have been weighing all of your informative responses and had narrowed it down to scuffing the surface, XIM oil bonding primer, and ProClassic alkyd semi~gloss. I was discussing my recipe with the Manager at my home store and he comp'd me a water based 2 part epoxy to mess around with. I am going to apply it directly onto the tile surface without a primer.
I will report the results on Tuesday.

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
I have used the oil based version of that product, lots and lots of the oil base ........... Painted the whole inside of a YMCA with it, including the ceilings ..... epoxy overspray really burns they eyes.
Let me know how that waterborn epoxy comes out, I have a few things I wouldnt mind trying it on if it is good. |

EDIT: The best part about this kit is that it is a 4:1 ratio instead of 1:1.

Re: Painting Tile Backsplash
Wise , I don't want to be a stick in the mud but I would be leery of that stuff.
I know time is short but I would mix even a cup of it right now and test it on some of your own tile. You probably know I'm not a big SW guy but I think that product is geared more towards commercial kitchen and bathroom sheetrock walls. Minimum prime it with XIM 400 Just my 2 cents

Re: Painting Tile BacksplashQuote:
![]() I don't make a habit of trying strange new flavors on jobs that are high profile, this is a simple sprucing up so the house will sell. If it does all go awry I will back peddle to my original plan. I am such an adrenaline junkie when it comes to pushing materials to their limits! Nah, that's just how I have learned everything I currently know. I have a feeling this epoxy may just have a chance to make it into my material favorites list.

Re: Painting Tile BacksplashQuote:
Delayed. The GC had to replace 3 irreplaceable tiles that went M.I.A. on Friday afternoon. Since he dragged his feet all day today fiddling around with the plumbing to the new granite ( btw he left the sewer pipe unplugged all weekend during the Realtor showings ) I will be applying first thing tomorrow a.m.Yes, I am slightly bummed.
