Painting With Subs In Oklahoma

Ok I guess everyone has to have help. I am working on a $4000.00 + home right now doing all of the base boards and walls in a few rooms upstairs for a guy to sell in South Tulsa right now. These guys are old friends that worked on cabinetry and fixtures for years and I have worked with them. Now they are out of work and want to work for me. They say they want 15.00 an hour but so far they can't produce and want to short change me on hours . what should I do? Crews are hard to come by here. In Oklahoma we have to pay subs with an affidavit for comp. because they did away with the cnc cards plus I am carrying them on my liability!!

To be fair, it's hard to go from cabinet finishing to production painting. Being picky, looking from every angle of light, etc., etc.
Maybe you could explain or show them what has to be done.

If you're carrying their liability, are you responsible for taxes and SS? Could be a problem.

Oh yes! I think It's a problem when people refuse to work.... to make up for lost hours. They won't hesitate for lost wages though. But that's just the away it is, I say to remember to always explain in detail before the job starts what HAS to be done & set a deadline and ALWAYS get the sub to write it out!!!! I think that I won't make this mistake again!!!

If you stick around this forum for a while, you'll see a few of us agree that working with or for family/friends is a bad idea.

They want to work for you, a bud, so they can shortchange hours and not produce

Cut them loose, hire a crew, or sub it out
It's hard, but that's the answer

Re: Painting With Subs In Oklahoma

I did cut them loose today first thing when they started whining, just like I thought they would. When I showed up with new time sheets they even wanted payed for their trips to the store on breaks and long lunches then I told them no way they get paid only for the time actually working on the job then there was a problem so I told them to get lost. I just got home at 9:30 because I am going to finish the job . Problem is that I've got 1-3 calls a day for estimating and still have a brush in my hand . Your right I need a good crew to sub but they all get busy the ones with insurance and they diss me. So here I am again the contractor/painter working twiced as hard as usual...
Fun!!
