Painting Stripes

I am painting some stripes on a new construction house. they are also doing their ceiling color about 5 inches down onto the wall. What type of tape do you use for this to get a really nice line. The ceilings are tan walls are dark green. Then the stripes are orangish red. I know, sounds hideous. HO is always right If one color was white i would run a small bead of caulk down the edge of the tape to seal it so there is no bleed throuh. However, the white would show a little on the dark green. Anyhow. I know to keep from having bleed through i need to pull the tape pretty quickly. However, i don't think the orange will cover over green in one coat. Any ideas.

Re: Painting Stripes

Saw a stencil chick spray her mounted stencils first with matte spray lacquor, so that would "seal" the bleed through area, and the sencil paint wouldn't bleed through.

There, I'm done pretending like I know stuff.

Re: Painting Stripes

I would use the 3M orange core blue tape. It still might pull up the tape in a few places, but not too bad. Seals pretty good. If you are really concerned about bleed through, I would try sealing the edge with a clear poly of similar sheen to the paint.

I imagine the walls are textured? If it is, just touch where it bleeds

If it is not, just press firmly on the side that is going to get painted, for a straight line.

Get a DELICATE Blue painters tape for it. And just cut and roll after the first coat.

Re: Painting Stripes

just put the tape down and paint the edge with the color that its masking. That way, any bleed is the same color and it seals the tape. Then paint as many coats as needed of the next color. Razor edge line, no bleed!

I do a fair amount of stripes and I use the tape listed above by DeanV. Usually once you get you first strip level you should be able to work your measurements off of the that and should be good to go.

Re: Painting Stripes

I'll tape about 3-5 stripes, cut nicely into the tape line, trying to not over lap the tape, then whizz, then after about 4 minutes later do another coat or just whiz (still have to cut the top and bottom), then quickly remove that tape, and move on to the next section/grouping.

I have used Easy mask in the past with good results, I believe it was the white tape. I was fortunate to buy the Orange core blue tape at a pro show few years ago at a good price so I have a good amount of it still.

You can also use a water based poly to seal those edges. We do it the same way that you said

You can also run a small bead of caulk on the painted side of the tape. I use this all the time and get super clean lines.

Re: Painting Stripes

I do a lot of striping. For tape, I use 60 day safe release tape, Scotch brand, blue. I usually use 2 inch tape. And, as noted in a previous reply, I also "seal" the tape with the base wall color, then paint the stripe color, 2 coats, peel the tape before the stripe color cures--I usually pull the tape when the paint is dry to the touch. For drawing the lines, I use a regular level--the pencil mark is clean and straight, vs. "free handing" the laser line from the laser level. Another hint: I usually use white chalk to draw the lines.
