Painting A Pool Table

I got a request to paint a Steepleton pool table. It's a lower end model, a good looking solid oak table, but certainly nothing fancy. He wants me to paint it a mahogany color.

I told him I would scuff it up, prime with bonding primer and topcoat with oil base. Anyone have a better idea or what products would you use? This is the first pool table I've had to paint. For the record, I told him not to paint it but to give it a maintenance coat of poly, he insisted on painting.

try automotive paint from napa if your gonna spray it or a high gloss industrial oil from sw. it would look sweet with auto paint. I did a coffee table for a nba player a few years ago and they loved it.also your gonna want to put a coat of clear gloss over it to give it depth good luck.

Re: Painting A Pool Table

The table can't be sprayed, I really would rather spray it but I don't have the shop or ideal setup to do it that way. I'm going to use an ox hair brush, add some penetrol and it'll look sharp.

But you're saying I need to put a clear coat of gloss poly over the oil base finish? I've never put poly over paint before, just lightly scuff the paint and go uh?
