Painting Peeling Off When Rolled

I just came from an estimate. The customer tried to paint over a gloss paint on the ceilings that I am assuming is latex based. They told me when they tried to paint it the painted surface rolled up into there roller and it was coming off in sheets as new paint was applied. Does anyone have any ideas on what happened here? Do you think using a primer would help this situation.

It sounds like a primer was not used before the gloss paint (on the ceilings?!?) was applied.

Skim coat where the paint released, prime it up with an oil primer (to seal and prevent further peeling), and then apply top coat.

If it's a older house more then likely it's oil base paint, it needs to be sanded to break the surface, then apply your latex prime, otherwise everyttime you go to roll it out, it will peel right on to the roller skin.

Re: Painting Peeling Off When Rolled

i have run into that before, it sucks. I really dont know the cause but if you check the substrate where the paint peeled it will be really chalky.

easiest way out would be to spray prime it oil (or BIN) spot patch where they messed it up and spray it with the finish coat. you can roll it if you don't back roll. the moisture in the paint is activating something under the top coat and causing the old material to fail. if you roll it, work fast - use a 18" roller.

it will probably fail down the road so do not give a warranty.

you can always fix it the correct way and remove all the loose paint, prime, patch and paint.

Assuming you mean it's peeling to the sheetrock:
1) No primer on original paint job
2) That stupid waxy sheetrock that was popular for a few years
3) Kilz2 primer (originally)
4) Original primer sprayed w/o back-rolling
5) Original primer sprayed w/o dusting ("don't worry, the sprayer will blow the dust off")
That's just off the top of my head
Really, we need more info to zero in

If you mean the new paint peels in sheets...
Well, the list of what might have gone wrong with this DIYer will be much longer

Re: Painting Peeling Off When Rolled

There was a product used around here years ago called milk paint, a real PITA when you run into it. Anything water based soaks it loose, then when you back roll it comes off on the roller.

Yes, don't warranty the work.

..it's baaaack
Many requests for it this year
People think it's a "green" thing or something

Thankfully, I've not had to repaint it
(not having been in the biz since the 1700s...lol)
Thanks for the (retro/future) tip

...sand, skimcoat, sand again, latex prime (SW PrepRite Classic), topcoat (SW CHB). Can't go wrong.

If this is in or near the kitchen it may be the grease from all the cooking collected on the ceilings. It should be scrubbed down before anything else is applied.
