Painting Over Stained Interior Trim

The client I have wants me to paint over the interior trim that was originally stained with a "pickled wash" like stain and clear coated with what I'll assume is poly. What type of primer would you suggest to go over the trim prior to my finish paint? I was hoping to use a latex finish paint. Is problock or superbond suffice? Or do I need to get crazy and use the zinnser shellac? there is quite a bit of trim and doors to do.

There was a time when I would have said that the only way to go was oil primer followed by an oil topcoat. But times have changed as have the products that are available. I am now perfectly comfortable using Zinsser 123 followed by a waterborne enamel topcoat. In either case I would wash thoroughly (ammonia soution for water based or TSP for oil) rinse and sand with fine sandpaper for extra tooth.

Yep a good acrylic bonding primer with work as well as oil now days. I've had plenty of people apply 1-2-3 right over high gloss poly with no sanding or cleaning and it adheres just fine. I too would recommend at least cleaning though. Sanding certainly won't hurt anything.
