Painting Over Staind Trim.
I need to know is there anyone out there that knows a better way to go over stained trim other then sanding it down and the prime and paint??
The color i am going to be going to is darker then the stain. I am looking for a way to save time and money. there is about 600 running feet of crown molding that need painted and it is 10-12ft up.. If any one has done thing before let me know what you charged if you don't mind. Thanks. |

Re: Painting Over Staind Trim.
Sorry pal, there's no better way
Conceivably, a paint-over-stained-trim project might be a candidate for a Wil-Bond wipe and then prime, but its not a better way If it's a good candidate, then it just might be a little quicker But you can only wipe a little at a time, then you must prime while it's still "fresh" At 600 feet, 10 feet up, I'd just as soon scuff sand and wipe the whole thing, then just make a banzai run with the primer, then the paint

Re: Painting Over Staind Trim.
Christopher,
Sanding, priming, and painting sounds like the most basic and most simplistic steps for any paint project. Is there any coating (poly, shellac, or varnish) on the stain ? If shellac, I would prime with BIN. If Poly, I'd use 100% Acrylic primer, if varnish - alkyd primer. But, YMMD |

Re: Painting Over Staind Trim.
I always tell them it will be cheaper to buy new pre primed trim. They go for it about 65% of the time, I paint them on the ground, then i bring my finish guy in to install. I would say it's one of the most costly things i charge for.
Of course I have no formula for charging to paint stained trim..because that would be quicker and more cost efficient, i just eye ball it and pray i'm close. |

Scuff sand to knock the finish off and prime with California ASAP primer, then caulk, fill holes and paint.

I did not think i would find a better way but i thought i would ask.. He wants all wood work in the house changed to painted and not stained. Including Kitchen cab, Built in book cases, Fire place, and all trim.. I was just hoping to find a quicker way with the crown molding...

Re: Painting Over Staind Trim.
If you absolutely want to skip the sanding step - you could go with XIM primer. Or you could wash with TSP - and then prime with latex. There is no easy way. I have primed with an average oil primer with great results in apartment/condo type settings and got away with it without sanding. BIN is real nasty and will stick like crazy without sanding.
