Painting Old Nasty Masonite?

Hello all,

I have had to paint masonite before and because the stuff is crap and cannot be sanded w/o tearing it to pieces I just did 50/50 emulsa bond to paint and sealed it up good and then caulked the seams and cracks and then did my second coat. Turned out good. This time the masonite has not been painted in years and is in terrible shape, flaking and cracking everywhere. it is my buddies place and he does not want to re-side it so i am going to try and work some magic. Any suggestions? I was thinking of emulsa-bonding it and then just trying to fill everything with caulk since sanding is out of the question. Masonite is pretty much impossible to prep. I am all ears...

Thanks

Sounds like a lost cause. Termite damage? Moisture?

For what its worth, finance some vinyl siding, i mean, instead of doing all that labor intensive prep which still wont look as good. You'll get fresh look for his home. other option is scrape the loose stuff, caulk, prime paint. should be ok. i wouldnt try too much for a perfect job.

i just did a job where it had the same siding, painted maybe twice in its life, look like crap, not even worth painting. we tore it down and resided all sides.

Re: Painting Old Nasty Masonite?

No termite or moisture really. We are in Utah so it is pretty dry. I am going to prime everything, caulk the piss out of it and then a coat of 50 emulsa to paint and a final coat of paint. It may not be pretty but I can spray the whole thing in a couple days. Should get him another 3 or 4 years but eventually reside it. Thanks for the input.
