Re: Painting Old Basement
that for a painting pro a lot of your questions seem to be questions a beginner or a non-pro would ask.

Re: Painting Old Basement
fyi I recently relocated here from the UK and although it's been 2 years now, the products over here are more widespread and diverse than in the UK, because I am unsure of the different products it,s always nice to get reassurance from fellow pros.
Again fyi have you noticed Sherlock! that my posts have never really been about how to apply basic products or pricing bids because guess what I do consider myself to be a pro and I will thank you to remember that. |

Re: Painting Old Basement
there is nothing wrong with asking questions.

David
Don't waste your time have the HO pay for Drylock Paint it costs a little more but the water issue will be stopped. any latex or oil base paints will bubble has soon as the water comes back with the Drylock Paints it is designed to stop water from coming in, I would scrape the spots where the water is coming in at, if you have any holes in the walls use Hydrolic cement to fill them. I would paint two caots. the Cheap way isn't always the best cause if she sells the house and the basement leaks guess what she will have to fix it. Good luck www.frankawitz.net Last edited by Frankawitz; 04-26-2009 at 08:37 AM. |

Re: Painting Old Basement
vandyandsons, I have dealt with waterstains and oil based products in the past it's just that here there is just a wider variety of products and rather than getting it wrong I chose to ask my fellow painters, I have every faith in my own ability to apply all products jeezzzz I've only been painting for the last 28 years+
Frankawitz, I have spoken to the h/o and given her the options of the drylok and oil primer she has gone with the oil primer due to cost factor,I also got her to sign a provision with regard to the said option, although the home is going up for sale who knows when it will actually sell and for that reason I don't want her coming back to me crying about taking the cheaper option. Will be painting it tomorrow so if I'm on here tomorrow night gibbering like a budgie you'll know the fumes got the better of me ![]() Regards David |

Re: Painting Old Basement
Dave, Hope it all works out for you, good thing you put it down in writing cause you know as soon as it rains and that basement starts leaking I would say she will be calling you to fix it. Good luck

Re: Painting Old Basement
Let us know how it all works out. I've noticed lately "most" sellers are going for the "low price" option. It's always nice to have one especially on a basement project like you're doing.

Re: Painting Old Basement
Update ! I used the kilz oil primer and as someone mentioned the fumes do get a bit heavy but wearing even a mediocre mask as I did it helps.
I applied 1ct straight out of the tin using a 3/4inch purdy colossus sleeve and the coverage was excellent. here are some pics |
