We just did one this week. It was a nightmare we hit it with a scaper the cardboard and everything came off with the paint chips. I would use exteriors paint not siding stain. You should prime if there are any stains or wetspots. Masonite is crap

I like to use a disc sander w/50grit...it'll feather with a little practice.
Oil base primer, acrylic latex paint

Re: Painting Masonite Siding

LOL, DON'T USE 50 GRIT!!

Hudson has it right. If you bust through the paint, you're in a world of hurt.

Surface sanding is ok, but do not sand the paint off. It really is like pressed paper under there. You can't patch it without using a hardener on it first. Well, you can, somewhat. It's not advisable at all.

When moisture hits the paper it bubbles, just like the paper on drywall.

So tell me Joe..what "patch" material do you use for masonite?

I haven't seen this siding...but I'll bet the drip edge is swollen and curled, and needs to be sanded smooth

Here..a 2 second web search for "sand masonite siding"

http://www.house-painting-info.com/sanding.html

No way I'd use that drill-sander rig like the guy in the picture though.

I like my Makita grinder/sander...14000 RPM. That's why I can use 50 grit. It takes practice, and a light (professional) touch. Otherwise you may find yourself looking through a hole into the livingroom! J/K

I wouldn't however even touch masonite siding with a hand-scraper.

My reply was to a guy who's never done it. Not taking a shot at you steve.
It does take time and practice. I would use the zinser product to harden the paper first, IF i was to attempt patching.

I've never patched exterior masonite that's been messed up like that. As far as the curling, I'd replace it rather than try to patch it.

Re: Painting Masonite Siding

If it's curled, you can sand it..and not have to patch it. You can't patch it and make it last anyhow.
Sanding will only give it a few more years...but I'd MUCH rather tell the HO that, than tell them "I'm sorry, you'll have to replace those boards"...

Because if you tell them that, they'll give the job to me.
