Painting The Light Surrounds On Ext. Doors

Does anyone here have a suggestion on the prep of the PVC surrounds on exterior doors. We've tried everything. The manufacture (ODL) claim "paint/stain ready" . They have told us to wipe it with a clean cloth and go. We have done this, primed, sanded, wiped with lacquor, mineral spirits, you name it, I've tried it. Even after the paint has cured you can peel the paint off with a fingernail or anything that might bump it. Thanks Roger

I have had success using Gripper from ICI it is a bonding primer sealer stain killer. I have seen it in one of the big box stores but I get it from ICI so I am not sure which one. It is latex and sticks well to most things. I do residential repaints so I do not do this trim brand new only after it has weathered, but a lot of it is unpainted when I get to it.

Re: Painting The Light Surrounds On Ext. Doors

Thank you, this is most frustrating. I will look this product up and give it a try. I work in a door shop and sub-paint for them in my shop. We can't get these companies who make the surrounds to even give us a call-back. We are now informing the HO that we are not painting the surround if the door is painted white as the surround is white, unless they insist we paint it. Colored doors, we have no choice.
thanks Roger

Iowa,

You also might want to try XIM bonding primer might be a little more expensive then Gripper, but I think it will work. Ive used on ceramic tile with no problem.

Thanks Dan

ICI Products are sold at Home Depot, Glidden label is probably on it but I believe its still called gripper.

XIM also makes a product that is designed a a primer for plastic and vinyl that I think would work. It is solvent based.

I haven't had a problem with bin 1-2-3. I just mask off the side lights and then shoot it with my hvlp and let it dry. Sand and then put on the first coat. sand again and then put on finish coat. I have yet to have a problem with the paint peeling
