Painting latex over laquer finish

Im doing a painted handrail in my own house and the spindles I bought have a white laquer finish on them from the factory...I want to change them to the same color of latex as the rest of the trim, would it be alright if i just scuffed them up, or should they be re-primed...or would it be easier just to buy them raw and prime and paint...

Are you talking about regular white out of the box spindles? If so a good scuff sand and 2 coats of finish should be fine. I spray them a lot of times before they get cut and built.

Applying latex paint over lacquer

Sand lightly and then apply one coat of COVER STAIN (fast drying oil base primer) then apply your latex finish coat. * If you put latex over the lacquer you will be able to scratch it off with your finger nail.

Good luck

You better prime with an oil based primer! Or you will regret it.

If they have a true lacquer finish on them then scuff sand and apply an oil primer. The ones I run into are not a lacquer finish or at least I never noticed if they were. I scuff sand them and give them 2 coats of finish. never have had any problems with the paint failing.
Why did you buy a lacquer finish spindle?
Wrought iron is what every body is using here these days, at least in higher end homes.
Spray them before you put them up if you have the opportunity.

This house is not a high end home, Its going to be sold in a couple years, Nothing is real fancy in it. Im looking for raw spindles that match the newel post, but cant seem to find anything...and spraying latex with an hvlp gun sucks, i did one hand rail like that already, I don't own an airless sprayer.
