Painting On The Glass Of The Window?

I'm not a painter, i'm a builder and seen a few painters come and go. But the one I saw recently is brilliant. But not until the other day did I notice when he undercoats or primes he doesn't cut in, for example if he is painting a window he will paint the frame and probably about half an inch of glass down the side of that bit of frame....Now I am not here to fault his work because his finished work is A1. But what I would like to know is what is this method, do you paint your primer and undercoat in water based paints and then scrape of the excess on the glass with a window scraper and then cut in only on the top coat, whatever it is it looks great and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this. Kind regards

I cut in the primer as well as the finish. Why bother cutting in the finish if you already have primer all over the glass? Seems to me that if you already have to clean the glass then what's a little finish coat going to matter? My worry would be during the job, with people comming in and out it will look hackish.

Sounds like more work to me .The whole idea is to keep the glass clean!

If he cant do a 6/6 window in less than 15 minutes , he is an IMPROVER.

And if he can do a 6/6 window in less than 15 minutes, what name will you call him then?

That's actually pretty smart!

Letting primer sit on the actual glass pane doesn't help to "insulate".
However, letting a little PAINT line the actual glass/trim edge DOES seal decently. Paint is water-resistant when cured...PRIMER isn't.

He may just be fast at trimming-back his paint/glass overlap.

Rubber cement can be used as a "taping-off" medium on glass too.

Another couple coats on top of the primer can make it a real chore screping it off. Takes 1 minute to plastic the window off. The contractor should spend the hour to do that and save himself hours of window cleaning.

Hey up Brickie {I'm guessing your a Brit}
Are you sure the windows do not have plastic already in place. Most unfinished windows and doors come with protective plastic in place. I'd be concerned about the possible scratching of glass with this practice. All professional painters take pride in being able to cut in without the aid of taping/cleaning, however if there's plastic in place I'll "slap" it on.

Again...............real brilliant.

If a painter came on my job and painted the glass intentionally , and the customer seen it......

I'd have a difficult time splaining lucy, just what the heck was going on .

I'm quite sure he is not inventing anything new , and would need to bring his circus act to a halt.

Not very professional to say the least . He may be another improver.

If I remember correctly Anderson windows say to paint onto the glass.

Or used to. I'm getting old, too many things to remember
