Painting garage floor
Hey guys,
Got involved on re paint project in an upscale neighborhood, decks, interior wall and ceiling painting and the HO asked if I'd paint his garage floor.
Garage floor is a little over one year in service, some tire marks and oil spills, but overall doesn't look too bad. This textured concrete floor has not been painted to date.
What is a good way to prep this garage floor to accept a coating and what would you recommend for a manufacturer, product line.
Thanks,
Charlie

Ok, as contractors in here, we mostly shy away from Home Depot. But, I have used the garage floor epoxy kit they have. It works great. I believe it comes with a cleaner. It also comes with 'sprinkles'- when spread correctly, they look good. There are other comparible kits out there, but this one I can recommend.

Any H&C product except water base. Make sure to do a good clean.

We always etch the floor, and use a degreaser for any oil spots.
Make sure that it's clean, or it won't last.
Also, check on how long the product takes to cure. Down here in Florida, I tell my customers that they shouldn't walk on the product (xylene based floor stain or epoxy) for a day, put anything heavy on it for three days, and not to drive on it for a week.
A bit of overkill ... but better safe than sorry.
Hot tires will pull up a poor product, or one that hasn't cured properly.

Charlie,
If you have a Devoe dealer in your area I would highly recommend using that product.
There are "some" good products out there but in my opinion there are none better than Devoe.
Even though the floor already has a profile I would still etch it. Also, you must clean the oil spills.
If you just want it quick and easy use the Devfloor 525 (2-part opoxy)
But there are many Devfloor options to choose from. Such as a high gloss urethane as a finish coat. I guess it would all depend on what the owner wants.

I agree with etching, even though it's textured.
Just want to add a warning that etching involves muriatic acid. Please use utmost caution with it. It is very, very dangerous.

I agree if done properly that is a good looking floor. The sprinkles make it stand out.

SW has an epoxy kit as well with sprinkles and all. I think that is also an H&C product and it's gauranteed not to pick up with tires, etc. If it were me, I'd try to get them to go for the xylene stain.
