Painting Galvinized Gutters

I was just wondering what type of primer/ paint you like to use on old galvinized gutters once they have been stripped of all old paint.

Well since they have been painted before, problock. If they are fresh, I wipe em down with tsp or vinegar and water first to remove the oils, then problock. If they are industrial.. you know those 6" wide suckers, I just use DTM paint.

Actually, depending on the age of galvanized steel (unless oily substances are present on the surface) there is no need to prime it. Galvanized steel forms a zinc petina which acts as a perfect substrate for paint. Do a search for galvanized steel on here and you should find a thread linking to a site with tons of info about it that I posted a while ago.

Zinc chromate has always been the preferred primer for galvanized and aluminum. It's green. I have yet to use the DTM but am considering it for some of my roof flashing.

The (thin) blue stuff is a lacquer base primer. What I have's called Metal-bond. Works good.

Re: Painting Galvinized Gutters

Im thinking that im going to be using SW Galvite, DTM Primer/Finish, or the DTM wash they look like good products, on paper anyway. And then topcoating that with Duration. This is for my folks house so i want to make it as bulletproof as i can. Opinions?

Lotta extra cash for the galvite primer for what DTM will do anyhow. It's up to you ultimatly!

edit: or did you just mean you will be using the dtm galvite finish... bah, I think I misread. Anyhoo, DTM can be tinted to whatever, don't really need a duration topcoat.

Re: Painting Galvinized Gutters

Yea, upon making the trip over to my paint rep and talkin to them, it looks like DTM all the way as far as primer goes. Then im going to top coat with Duration since the rest of the house trim needs a paintjob anyway. Then everything will match. Thanks for the help guys.
