Hey Thom,
You're hired! Can you start now and be finished by midnight?
Sterling,
The reason you got that answer is because your question is nearly impossible for anyone else to answer because there are far too many variables and market forces in place.
Start reading through all of the posts for the past month. There have been quite a few threads on "what would you charge?", etc., so you can get an idea of the variables.
Now... if you put up an exact job description with room dimensions, doors, windows, wall height, etc., etc., you might get a few replies on what people would charge.
If you are just starting out and have never written an estimate before, your best bet would be to have a friend waste some poor painters time by getting a few estimates and then you could get an idea of what others are charging in your area and how to write up a decent estimate/proposal. There is also a "file swapping" forum with a pinned topic of forms available, where you can find sample contracts, estimates, etc. http://www.contractortalk.com/f65/
When I first started out, I went the "lowest price" route and told people I would beat their lowest legitimate estimate by 20% on labor costs. This got me a few jobs and then the referrals but it also kind of locks you into low labor prices until you can break this "lowest price" chain and mentality... but at least it gets you some cash flow and experience.
Keep accurate records of how much time each room is taking you to complete so you can then base your future estimates on better figures with the labor prices you really need to thrive and succeed.

How to figure costs?
Or do you want to know how much to charge?
Well...either way, use the "search this forum" button and punch in "pricing" etc...
How to figure costs usually comes up when someone asks "How Much Do I Charge?"

If you will first post an A-Z on setting travertine tiles starting with every possible tool needed, the name of your supplier, how much I should pay for materials, an explaination of the different varieties of stone, how to measure and account for waste, what type of set to use, your favorite grout mix (don't forget to discuss consistency) as well as send me your estimating forms (I don't really care if they cost you hundreds of dollars and years of experience to develop) and I will share a cost estimating spread sheet with you.
I'm just breaking your stones a bit (get it.. stones) but you see what you are asking is a bit over the top?

New construction in Michigan.
I charge my Builders $2.00-$2.50 a sq.ft. on average.
I use Benjamin moore super spec for ceilings/trim (white) and Coronado kid proof flat paint for walls(up too 4 colors).
Type of windows are important to know before pricing.

Spec Homes. Nothing real custom about them. I prep all the trim, cover tile floors & cabinets, spray all the trim, spray and back roll the ceilings, and then brush & roll the walls. All the fixtures, toilets, wood floors, carpet, kitchen / bath tops, and hardware goes in when i'm done. My builders work with me to make sure there are no other contractors working until i'm done.

It is good when you can get a builder that works with the painters. We had one builder whose supervisor was a real idiot from cal state fulerton or the republic thereof. I would always dust off the top of window frames, sills, tops of door jambs and floors to make sure we had a clean envoroment to work with since we were using ben moore impervo oil. He would walk in from a muddied job site and stomp the excess from his shoes looking at me with this crappy grin on his face. I giot onto him and actuall one time pulled the whole crew from the site. My Uncle was pissed, but what would it be worth painting oil while this idiot brought in that mud as well as bringing in tile guys who were going to cut in the house during this process. I only worked with one builder here in florida that did things by the book. He ran such a tight ship no one ever knew the other subs or saw them. The fathers son who was the superviser then actually on bump outs would walk the house and even get on his knees to look for imperfections on walls and trim. He used a silk stocking on his hand to feel all the trim, doors, walls and if anything snagged we had to resand and coat. He buids a good house though.

How come carpenters laugh so hard when I say, "Please don't rooster tail sawdust in the house"?
