Re: Painting Bathroom....

We did a few many years ago. We used an epoxy and applied it with a foam roller. I wouldn't do it again. It was an absolute nightmare to clean and mask everything properly.

Don't believe anything you see on those shows
They are entertainment, and to sell product for the sponsers

But aside from that, don't paint the tile
It's way over in the "Bad Idea" column

I don't recommend it but if the cust. insists I call in the guys that do it for a living. BTW, call THEM when it doesn't work.

Re: Painting Bathroom....

If I had to.....I'd do it this way.

A) find your surface coat first. Better be a 2-part epoxy or I'm not approaching the job.

B) Follow all directions to the T. This will probably mean an air sander, silicone carbide papers and flood sanding. Be sure to hit all tile radii to the grout line without digging into the grout.

C) Clean, clean, clean.

D) Apply product of choice

Re: Painting Bathroom....

There is a paint for tiles.....we use to paint some cheap apartments and there was a guy with an HVLP that was painting the tubs with a strong smelling finish, some kind of epoxy....like reglazing them. I will see if I can find out what it was, but it turned out good. We checked them out after he finished a few and was surprised.

Re: Painting Bathroom....

Why yes of course I paint tile all the time.and yes even a cave man can do it.dont use the stuff they sell at your local paint store.surface prep is key to a long lasting finish.if doing tile walls above bath tub or shower pan remove all soap scum and silicone/caulkings
,use ajax or comet type abrasive powered cleaners and xtra scrubbing at above and below soap dish areas and shower fixtures i use a grout file to clean out dirty grungy gruot lines use a 4" razor scraper to remove heavy soap scum and caulk.use bondo to shape and fill in damaged tile, same prep work for tile outside of wet areas except i use solvents only for cleaning walls like denatured alcohol and mek.after all is clean tight and masked off i use a wipe on primer two coats dries in about 5-15 minutes then apply 1-2 coats epoxy primer coating depending on condition of tile surface let dry about 15-20 min then top coat with 2-3 coats aliphatic acrylic poly urethane about 10-15 minutes dry time between coats.make darn sure you have a good respirator and ventillation.
oh yeah i use midwest chemicals for most of my refinishing materials and stay away from epoxies as a top coat as they will yellow with time and take 3 daze to put back in use vs 24 hours with poly.
