Painting Aluminum
Any advice from the painters for painting an aluminum storm door? This is my MIL's door, and she wants it painted It is showing UV bleaching/discoloration. I am more inclined to replace it, but she asked if I would paint it for her.
TIA

if it was my door..would scuff lightly with a green scuff pad, wipe it down and shoot it with an airless sprayer tip size .409 or a .411 .

Spraying would be ideal, but might not be worth the cleanup hassle. Brush/Roll will work fine.
If you are looking for products to use. BM DTM, Zinsser 123, and SW Bonding Primer are all good products for aluminum and for this project.
Good luck

Ya some of you guys amaze me with your fixation on spraying for only one door. The set up and cleaning would take twice as long as brushing and or rolling.

I'm not planning on spraying, just b/c I hate cleaning my sprayer. I was more concerned about paint adhesion. So thanks paintguy, I'll grab some SW bonding primer. I am still going to try to convince her to replace it just b/c its less time consuming for me and its pro-bono work.

Use the best. XIM 400W bonding primer. You really don't want to go back to your mother-in-laws to fix it if it starts peeling much less hear about it at every family gathering. Sounds like a critical application to me.

If there is any chalking or peeling, I'd use something like Zinsser Peelstop, a clear bonding primer. Then I'd use a good hard DTM. Sampson actually has one of the best DTM products I've used. It's called Weatherbrite and has a very hard durable finish with a good gloss, but not a high gloss. It's speced for roofs.

I keep a $20 Hvlp around for small stuff like that, I never tear it apart and clean it, just rinse it with thinner a few times after each use. If it breaks or clogs too bad I just replace it, I always seem to get my moneys worth out of them and it is alot easier then cleaning up my good equipment.
