Re: Painters, What Do You Do During Winter?

I know I'm late to this thread, but not so many people mentioned what we did for years; snow removal.

I happened to love it, good money and fresh air. You could plow driveways, shovel sidewalks or just drive a landscape companies plow at their hourly rate for drivers only (no truck investment is a lower hourly rate, but easier to get started)

For cash flow, we signed up half of the customers on fixed annual contract paid in full upfront so we get at least that money even if not much snow. Then the other half were on a per visit basis paid after each storm, with an upcharge per inch if the storm is bigger. That gives you extra if it's a heavy snow year.

Crew who hated snow or couldn't grasp how an alarm clock set to 3 AM operates didn't make it through 1 winter. Crew that liked signed up every year for the extra cash and to get out of the house.

Not for everyone, but man, was the money righteous. Made otherwise bad years tolerable and good years much better.

Downside: can't schedule a vacation during snow season or the snow gods will dump 22 inches on you...
