Re: Painters Tips

Thanks but neither was the right one.

There was a good tip about keeping the weather stripping from sticking when painting exterior doors. The weather is nice, I'll just pull the w/s.

Re: Painters Tips

How does the baby powder get applied to the weather stripping? Seems like vaseline would work better.

Re: Painters Tips

Right. Chap Stick is made with petroleum jelly, same as vaseline, which is why I was thinking vaseline. I still want to know if the baby powder is a legitimate tip or maybe just a joke. I know we have a few class clowns out here. If baby powder is actually used, how is it applied and how does it keep paint from sticking to the w/s. It seems the BP would just be absorbed into the wet paint or dry on top leaving an unsightly finish.

Re: Painters Tips

Baby Powder...its the real deal. I have been doing it that way for years. Just puff it on right from the container. A little messy...but smells great Apply directly to the WS works great.

If you think that you have a damp area to paint let the power sit on that spot over night and it will draw the moisture out.

Re: Painters Tips

So... do you squirt the BP on the paint or WS? Does it matter what kind of WS... tubing or felt or metal or ???

Re: Painters Tips

Nothing is going to work if you close the door when its wet. Always keep the door cracked as long as possible before you shut it. I've seen guys use and artist-type brush (1/2" or so) and brush the powder on the weather stripping. These tactics are for the rubber weather stripping. I've never had a problem with felt sticking to fresh paint.

BTW, the phenomenon we are talking about is called blocking.

Stolen from the SW website:

Blocking

DESCRIPTION
Undesirable adhesion between two painted surfaces or between paint and weather stripping. The paint sticks to itself or to the weather stripping when a window or door is opened and usually leaves bare patches of substrate.

POSSIBLE CAUSE
• Not allowing sufficient time for the coating to dry before closing doors or windows.
• Use of a paint with low block resistance (e.g. when two painted surfaces touch, the paint tends to adhere to itself).

SOLUTION

See Lead Information.

Paint with an oil-base coating or use a high quality semi-gloss or gloss latex with good block resistance.

Remove all loose paint by scraping or other methods, and sand the surface to smooth out any rough edges. Remove all surface contamination by washing with ProClean Professional® Prep Wash Concentrated Cleaner or other appropriate cleaner; rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull.

Prime as needed and topcoat. Follow paint label instructions regarding dry times.

Application of talcum powder, wax, or soap may temporarily relieve blocking.

Re: Painters Tips

Here's a totally unrelated tip for ya all:

Every time you finish off a 5 of paint or whatever, pull out the rubber seal from inside the edge of the lid, and wipe it clean. These come in handy quite often. It is the perfect sized rubber band. When you are done painting for the day, just dip your roller/screen in the 5 you are working out of, and throw some plastic over the top. Take the big ass rubber band, and snap it around the edge. This will keep a set up fresh for days.

Thank me later, OK?

Re: Painters Tips

I remove the w/s for a day or two until the door cures enough not to stick. although os softer paints will stick for weeks and need a lube.
