Re: Paint Stained Wood
Id use an alcohol primer and sand... takes ALOT of work away from running over old glossed wood.

Re: Paint Stained Wood
I would sand and hit it with something like coverstain. I love BIN, but it burns through edges when you sand it since it does not build thick and I wonder if it is more prone to chipping than a more flexible primer.

Re: Paint Stained Wood
That's not a whole lot of sanding. You only need to sand enough to dull the glossy surface for an excellent bond.
If you want to do it without sanding, xim and preprite will do as good as any bonding primer, but for the little effort of sanding, you get a much better job. Last edited by Joewho; 03-04-2007 at 04:39 PM. |

Re: Paint Stained Wood
I am a creature of habit, so I always scuff the surface a little. Prime with xim or coverstain. Would any of you have faith in the latex bonding primers holding up/doing the job in this situation?

Re: Paint Stained WoodQuote:
The BIN, it's a better stain blocker, and frankly it has unbelievable adhesion I'd recommend it for any time going over stain really But the truth is it's stinky, you need fresh air and a respirator And doesn't apply real well (it's watery), and being shellac, you might as well use a throw away brush to apply it The oil-based will usually work OK But the BIN is a better stain blocker So on something lighter colored, I might use Z's Cover Stain If it's darker. I'll use Z's BIN for sure

Re: Paint Stained Wood
to take a coat away
I would use two coats on lighter wood color and since u stated another product for darker wood I may have to use three. that is if I don't use Z's BIN. |

Re: Paint Stained Wood
I have had some sucess with Z's 123 before if smell was an issue with HO's but Bin or Cover Stain are great for that purpose.

Re: Paint Stained Wood
As far as the waterbase primers, I have found then will adhere fine if you sand properly, but sometimes there will be bleed through, even from wood such as light oak.

Re: Paint Stained Wood
I agree....BIN it is. Sometimes we will use pro-block or the 123 if we have homeowners/children present during the painting indoors, but even then, we end up following up with a solvent based primer to lock out bleed through.
Anything water based takes the chance of liquifying the stain and/or wood tannins and bleeding through. For things in this condition (already stained/poly'd) we always sand good, tack, prime, sand lightly (220 grit), tack, and two finish coats.
