Paint Removal Tools
Does anyone have recommendation(s) for paint removal tool other than orbitor or finishing sander for rough area most common areas i find them is the exterior on the wood. Paint is kinda of thick so when scraping some if it comes off but leaves patches of removed paint. I have used an air driven needle gun to remove paint from metal. Is there one for wood that won't dent?
Thanks |

Re: Paint Removal Tools
No, never had one or used one. But a guy who worked for me had a lot of experience with one, and said it worked well.

Re: Paint Removal Tools
have you tried heat gun for tough spots? or the silent paint remover (infra-red heating unit)
Or, dare I say, paint removing chemicals?? |

I was just wondering if it was any good. Especially the debris collection. How does it stack up against the "Silent Paint Remover" which looks pretty darn cool to me.

Re: Paint Removal Tools
Yes, the paint shaver rocks. The earlier versions were cheap and didn't do so good, but the newer ones work a lot better. We never had one with the dust collection, but it seems like it works great.
The biggest downfall of the product is that it takes off a small amount of surface material with it, and if you don't use it carefully you'll have swirl marks to sand out of the wood. It can only handle flat surfaces. Anything with a curvature is out of the question. Other than that, the thing works awesome. You can strip lap siding lightning fast, or any other flat surface for that matter, but most times you will have to do a good bit of sanding to get the surface smooth again.

Re: Paint Removal Tools
We have used a couple of defferent things to strip paint, I bought a Porter Cable Paint stripper it has a 6" carbite disc and this thing will take paint off of clapboard siding in no time
, we have also used Peel Away which works great on mutiple layers of paint and if you have wood trim with allot of detail this is the best way to go, put it on and let it do the work then you come back and clean it up not much scraping.

Re: Paint Removal Tools
I have heard of the paint shaver. I think it will work but I would like to find out more about it. I would like to know how good it is on oil paints inside a house and wall paper.

Dad's Marine and Varnish stripper from Sansher. Tough to locate in some areas, can't be beat for performance.

Re: Paint Removal Tools
High heat guns 1000* make toxic fumes from pre 1978 paint with lead. Low heat 400-600 Speedheater infrared (Eco-Strip) does not plus lower risk of fire. Contractors can't use high heat anymore says EPA, esp if kids around. Soft paint is low dust, so no vacuum attachment needed like for sanders and shavers. Works great on flat siding and trimwork even if beads and grooves; just need right scraper to fit curves.
