Paint On Linoleum

I'm doing a new construction house. For some reason the linoleum was down when I got there to start painting. Needless to say, some paint got tracked on the floor. I was cleaning the floors today with oops. Few drops, let it sit, and the paint came right up. However, there are a couple spots that are a real hazy yellow that the homeowner thinks is paint. To me it looks like a stain of some sort. We did use yellow paint but nowhere near the kitchen. When scrubbed nothing happens. I showed the homeowner how easily the spots of latex comes off. Any idea of what else could cause a stain like this?

I can't really say what could leave a kind of yellowish stain, but i can tell you that the use of drops and runners through the walkways will eliminate many of these problems.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

We had drops over all of the floor. We got done painting the kitchen and moved on to other rooms. The builder moved the drops which had some wet paint drops on it. there was very little paint I had to remove. I just don't know what would have caused these yellowish stains. Maybe coffee? Not sure.

Good Lord they could be anything
If it doesn't come up with Oops!, it's not paint and/or your paint

Did you use any solvents at all?
Could they have been there to start?

Sux though...
From working in a land where it's the law to have white exterior trim, I can't tell you how much bird poo I've cleaned up that I "dripped" onto people's porches

Re: Paint On Linoleum

I know that it is not paint. It does nothing when scrubbed. it is obviously something stained into the floor. I have used no solvents of any sort. I have cleaned lots of bird poo as well! I just humor people and wipe it up.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

some cooking spices will leave a yellowish stain even after getting cleaned up
i.e. turmeric or even curry sauce spillage, I think it has been there long before you did any painting.

Huh? You said in your original post that you used oops to clean up the paint drips. If that's not a solvent then nothing is. Is it possible that the oops combined with the paint and melted into the floor in those spots? For relatively fresh latex paint my first choice for cleanup would be a water dampened rag.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

no the reason I got the oops out of the truck was that I saw the spots.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

unless someone else tried to clean the linoleum, it couldn't have been from the oops. I got the oops out after i saw the spots. Maybe the homeowner saw a paint drop and tried to clean it with something. Now I am going to worry that I caused more spots because I did clean any spots that were paint with oops. I have cleaned linoleum with oops before and never had any problems.

oops, sorry
Just thought I should mention about the CVT, as I learned the hard way
(though I think it even says something about that on the can...instructions-bah)
It shows up right away though...you'd see it

Re: Paint On Linoleum

Sounds like some sort of solvent... or heat... and my guess it was another trade that did it.

Example: I was called in for a paint fix on a wall in an entryway of a new construction res. there was a4" circle of a blem noticeable on the wall.
Painters had touched up before I got there... no joy.

The texture was a bit mismatched...

I scraped it a bit and it was NOT hard, or completely dry... it was oily.
Plumbers had made a hole (accident) and filled it w plumber putty, drywall fix guys had gone over that & textured, and painters had touched up over all...

I cut it out, installed a plug, and retextured/painted, and all was good.

Maybe your plumbers smeared some of their flux on the vinyl???
I don't intend to be bashing plumbers here...

That yellow haze is not going away. Will need to replace that floor covering.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

This is always a tough one. When i do remodels now, I cover every inch of the finished floor with a layer of rosin paper and therma-ply and tape the seams. I also tell the home owner it has to stay down on the floor until the job is completed or I won't warranty the condition of the floor. It also helps to document conditions with a camera before starting when possible. I know this is not always easy and time is always a factor but too often we get blamed for things we had nothing to do with. In some cases, I think it is deliberate on the part of the home owner as a ploy to cheat their contractor or get him to make free repairs.
Does the home owner smoke? It could be a burn from a cigarette ember. Linoleum, unlike vinyl flooring, the color should be impregnated into the material itself and it should be possible to polish it out. Linoleum, real linoleum, is porous and requires occasional waxing to preserve it. I don't think that your cleaning efforts or paint had anything to do with these stains.

Re: Paint On Linoleum

if they do try to pin it to me is there a chance i could hire a professional to steam it out or something? I honestly think it could have been there from day 1. It is totally imbedded in the surface. If i have to I will put some of the yellow paint on the floor and show the difference between the mystery stain and the paint. Latex paint would sit on top of the linoluem. This is totally imbedded and is now part of the floor. I'll keep you all updated. this guy was vey upset at my bid in the first place. Said I better be painting murals for what i was charging. I assumed i wasn't getting the job. Low and behold he called back. Hopefully this isn't his way of getting something for nothing. He has been really friendly throughout this paint job so far. We shall see
