Re: Outdoor Paint

Oil and tin don't mix that well. You'd be better of with an acrylic DTM.

Re: Outdoor Paint

Chances are it is galvanized metal which would require a primer before using an alkyd. Acrylics generally hold up well on galvanized sheet metal and would work well on unpainted galvanized.

If it isn't very old there is a good possibility that the material is aluminum in which case a bit more care should be given. Some acrylics work well on aluminum. DTM does and there are others.

If the surface is already coated then it needs to be cleaned and topcoated, depending on what is on it now. Sometimes when you put a waterborn product on a prefinished metal siding it takes about 10 days for the new coating to cure out completely and adhere good to the old coating. Until that time it can sometimes be peeled off with a fingernail.

Alkyd enamel will only work if the metal has been primed or has a previous coating on it. Acrylics will still do a better job and last longer on "tin".

I would use DTM (Direct to metal)..treat any areas with rust first with red oxide primer...if none present,great...wash surfaces to be painted and try to paint on a cloudy (not rainy) day..direct sun not good!!

Re: Outdoor Paint

I agree any DTM. I just painted a couple of tin roofs using Porter acrylic DTM with good results.

Coronado has an excellent product call Rust Scat, but it only comes in semi gloss and gloss
