Are other trades stepping on your toes?

Has anyone else lost painting contracts to other trades?

I just lost a Bathroom remodel at a school that involves building a wall, installing FRP, and painting to a plumbing/HVAC company.

Last week I was bidding on a painting job that involved replacing the lights in a gym at a Community College and an electrical contractor was bidding the painting to be completed in-house.

I understand that you don't have to be a college graduate to be a painter but there is a huge difference between wiring a panel and spraying a 18K sf Tectum ceiling or snaking a toilet and cutting a straight line with a brush. Everybody is a painter now.

Times are tough in these uncertain economic times, it looks like other trades are trying to diversify to keep revenue coming in. I guess I am going to have to buy some mobile welding equipment to get some of the Oboma money by fixing highway bridges (the interbelt bridge in Cleveland is about to collaps). Maybe I'll start bidding HVAC and send my painters out to do the work.

Is it getting like this for other commercial painting contractors or are these isolated incidents?
