Opinions On Product For Staining Deck

Hello Everyone,

I'm going to re-stain my fathers deck for him, and I'd really like to do a top-notch job. In the past I've used sherwin solid color water based Deckscapes. Alot of leaves fall on the deck and cause staining, and the stain begins to wear off in about a year. I live in Wisconsin so we have a rather harsh climate for decks with all the seasonal changes. I do mostly interior painting and some exterior work but am not all that familar with what product is very high quility for a deck.

This is the sitution with the deck. Its about 15 years old. The woods in good shape, but the stain is wears off in about a year. My fathers always used just cheap stain in the past and last year I put the Sherwin Deckscapes on it. It held up a little better but I wasnt all that impressed with it.

I know everyone has there preferance on were to go to get there materials. I use sherwin williams and would prefer to use on of there products if anyone knows of something thats top-notch, but I'm open to any product.

Thanks much

I'm looking to do a good, thorough job and am not worried about labor, or material cost. What would you recommend using and what process.
Its got to be a solid color stain

I use cabot stains for my business, which hold up rather well. The majority of cabots products are oil based which is designed to penetrate the wood.

Since you want a solid color stain. I still recomend cabot, but make sure you get the oil based solid not the water based. Make sure you powerwash the deck and if youve got a lot of dirt try a consumer brand deck cleaner. Application, for me is mostly pads. Ive never bothered with spraying. Pad will get you most of the railings and all of the surface, stairs and posts. Just carry a 1.5inch brush for the corners of the spindles that you cant reach with the pad.

The stain costs about 30 a gallon, but will def hold up longer. Im not familiar with the climate up there, but from what your saying, I wouldnt expect more than 3 years out of the stain.

Dont let anyone tell you to paint it either.

You need to strip the previous latex finish from the deck with a sodium hydroxide stripper, and follow it with either an oxacilic acid or citric acid brightener to make sure the wood is ready to accept the new stain. Not stripping is the number one way to do a BS job on your father's deck. I can recommend TimberStrip Pro and TimberBright. They will do you good on this type of job and can be found HERE!

Next, follow up like bigchaz said with a penetrating oil finish...cabbots is a good product if you're looking for a solid.

Cabots or Sikkens Oil Based. Oil and water do not mix; I feel that Oil based Products by far outlast Water based for sealing. Like the others have said, it won't matter what you seal with if the clean/strip/prep is shoddy. On my website you can find a link to a great deck restoring product.
