I might have been a bit vague.
Here is a spec of a few different paints I use.
Pittsburgh: Primer-Seal Grip Int/Ext 100% Primer/Sealer
Finish-Manor Hall Exterior Semogloss/SunProof Semigloss.
BenjaminMoore:Primer-Fresh Start All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer
Finish-MoorGard® 100% Acrylic
or
MoorGlo 100% Acrylic
Sherwin-Williams:Primer-PrepriteProBlock Int/Ext latex primer/sealer
Finish-Duration Exterior Semigloss
Or
Super Paint Exterior gloss

Good 45 yr. caulk
No primer needed with Duration
Duration Exterior was recommended to me by 3 paint stores
Superpaint was also recommended, but it's inferior to Duration

Actually I am a fan of Superpaint, and use no primer on hardi unless it's in real bad shape... couple times H/O's have complained about the look of Duration and i've made them happy with SP... go figure!
On the flip side, I pitch hit from time to time with locals in the area that get in over thier heads... went to help this one guy and he wanted to prime hardi with loxon because it's substrate... I left... heh, the one guy I took out there stayed but called later and said "This guy has no f'ing clue".....

Brushslingers? Think maybe the first (primer) coat of Duaration did the trick with the SP as finish coat? Maybe would have been the same result if SP had been first coat and Duration finish coat?
P.S. This thread is what promted me to post asking about self primers.

Dunno, I believe personally that Duration doesn't have as nice a gloss as SP, pretty sure that's what turns people on... shiny things...

B-I-N primer as seen in this graph http://www.zinsser.com/primerapps.asp
Followed by your favorite topcoat. I used BM.
I'm not really a painter and generally follow the info from here. This combo has made it through 4 yrs. of SoFL sun and 3 hurricanes intact.

I am a fan of the Satin finish on exterior. Glossy on just the trim.
There is a house here in town that is over 100 years old, like a Victorian house. It is in horrible shape. Someone I knew was the guy that painted it and it looked like crap!!!!! He used a gloss on the exterior, and it showed everything. He said the homeowner wanted it paint and didn't want to pay for the prep work to be done like it should....and also insisted on the gloss! The painter said he would do it, but under the condition he didn't get any credit for the job.

Yeah, I agree if its a surface that people do not want too much attention paid I will suggest BM moorgard or SP Satin. I have completed a few jobs with the sp Gloss as a finish and it looks like it was dipped in liquid plastic. Huh thats a cool lifetime coating name aint it
