One More Project For The "honey-do" List

Mrs. Ron would like our hardwood staircase refinished soon. Slightly darker stain and polyurethaned, 15 steps, handrail, and 60 balusters
I'm thinking of passing it on to Ron jr. and need some advice on how to sand the 60 balusters. Are the spongy sanding pads the way to go or is there a trade secret I don't know about? And yes, I will shoot the boy a little pocket change

Often it's just as effective cost wise to call your stair guy
The cost/labor to install new ones can easily be competitive to stripping them
Personally I'd pop them out and have them stripped (strip shop) if it was important to use them (disco'd, real $$$$ to replace, etc...)
The cost of that vs. just having new ones put in...eh....not much dif really
Once you pop them out...you have to put them back in...well, you're getting the labor for that vs. new idea now

Fortunately, the trend has been to paint them white, which is not as much as an issue
