Old School Roller, New To Spraying

i've rolled and brushed for 22 yrs and i just bought my first sprayer. it's a graco 190es. i used it on ceilings and works great BUT when i used it on walls, all i saw was lines everywhere. I NEVER LEAVE LINES with a roller. i used 513,515, and 517 tips and still have horizontal lines with even two coats of flat promar 200. i did thin the paint with water as i was told by a hd employee who sounds like he knew something. should i thin the paint?? i did set the psi on various levels and still get the outer lines. the filters were both clean too. someone please help this old school painter with a new trick.
thanks.

Never cut your paint with water or any other additive if you can help it is the way I was raised. Your tips are new so it takes a bit to break them in and guess what? In the end of its life ti will react the same way. Also, trash in the tip can cause it to show fingers(lines) I have never been a fan of spraying walls unless it is closets and not walk ins for that matter. You have been like I was trained to roll and cut in with a brush. Use the spray gun, do not let it use you and do not get too dependent upon it. I only helped one friend of mine one time that always sprayed his walls, but like most they back roll. I tell you what a good system was I showed him was to spray one coat of high build primer on the walls and spray two lighter coats on the walls with a finish wall paint. It turned out pretty good for spray and touched up well with no flashing as well as it covered alot of the imperfections. Seven years ago i mentioned the high build primer to a spray jockey and they thought I just hurt their feelings. They told me that takes away from profit. I also told them to box their paints and they gave me that dumb gilligan look because they never heard of boxing paint. Maybe thats why most have a touch up problem?

Re: Old School Roller, New To Spraying

Most lines are caused by gummed up guards... not tips. However, backrolling is the only way to go with spraying.... otherwise you can't touchup without it looking like A**. I crosshatch primer, which makes most of it dissapear but, I still backroll ANY finish.

the last time I used PM200 I was doing a color change in apartments. Both me and the main contractor were having issues with lines. So I would lay down a base coat and he would come back with a light mist to cover the lines and feather in another coat..........the point is ....... I was reading on the bucket AFTER THE JOB that PM200 requires a .019 tip or bigger, or so it says on the bucket. try that and see it that works.

Re: Old School Roller, New To Spraying

The advice you got from these guys is right on, but pro mar 200 flat SUCKS especially when spraying it. I have used alot of is on a spec. job and I will never use it again. The pro mar 400 flat is great works much better. Also, if the pro mar you are using is an illuminious base...it is even harder to use. Always backroll.

Not really, me and my main guy can spray and backroll a footprint 1700 square in 4 hours. Just gotta keep in mind when your spraying, LAY IT ON, the backroller will be right on your butt unless he sucks. But ya, we do use bigger tips.. dig the new 1024....

Re: Old School Roller, New To Spraying

my only problem with that is i work alone. thats why i was wondering if it would take longer. but if it even takes twice as long and comparing with dipping, rolling, and cutting in ; i guess it's still quicker...
i have a 3200sqft house i'm starting monday BUT all the bedrooms and DIFFERENT COLORS!!! I don't think i'll be spraying all the walls; just ceilings.

Re: Old School Roller, New To Spraying

thank you all for the great advice.
i guess i'll just have to earn some experience with my new toy.AND BUY A NEW LARGER TIP. this 190es states it can only use up to .19 tip max.
and the instructions state that if i still get lines and my spray to use a smaller tip. go figure... i call them not instructions but destructions

Re: Old School Roller, New To Spraying

Joe for as far i know the 515 is the most common tip use for standard wall repaints............ also when you get your '19' start with the pressure about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up and tweak from there.

I have also had "lines" but when it dries the lines go away and you never see them.

let us know how it turns out

Cause you need the whip.. heh. Ya it will PUSH a .021 but you need a whip to do it.
