Oil..Latex..or is it Stain?

Guys...(and girls) My last 2 exteriors were confusing on what was used prior to me being there... todays was a solid stain body..looked like it was over latex... with gutters painted with what I'm not sure...i'd hope latex...but do I realy know?... the lady's husband recently died and took the info w/ him... and the foundation is also painted..I hope latex also...but you know homeowners...if the stain is already in the bucket..they will use it on everything..... what I'm getting at is... for my 2 yr warranty to be safe... how do we really tell whats on what?
do any of you have any secret ways of testing? latex..oil..stain..?

denatured alchohol on a rag. If color comes off, its latex(waterbase), if not, its oil. But...same solvent will also reactivate shellac, which shouldnt be outside but just for your info. And if it should be oil, then do your lead test.
