New Exterior Columns

Hi,

Need to paint new exterior columns--appear to be the fiberglass variety. I assume need to prime (and probably would use exterior latex), but since I don;t do much exterior work, I thought I'd see if any of you have any tips or tricks on these babies.

Thanks!

Richie

Thats what we do, we usually sand them with pretty rough sandpaper to give the primer a little something to stick to. So it's sand, prime, 2 coats of good exterior latex paint.

Usually there are some pin holes and rough spots on those columns, if you have a picky customer, you may want to fill them in before the customer has a chance to complain.

Don't forget to use a tack cloth on the surface after sanding. For the latex topcoat, go 100% acrylic.

Haven't used a tack cloth in years, but what ever floats yer boat.

By tack cloth I mean something to wipe the dust from the surface after sanding. Sorry, I don't skip steps. In this case, it could be a wet rag...
