Need Workers!!
I am in Northville, MI and I have been looking for workers for forever. I have 2 but desperately need more.
Any ideas on how to get experienced workers quickly. I have exhausted my resources and am stumped here. |

offer more money. The more you offer, the quicker you'll find help.

Re: Need Workers!!
those are all great ideas, but if you've been looking 'forever' it's one of two problems. You are not paying enough to attract qualified help, or you are unable to attract qualified help for the money you are offering.
What do other industries do when there is a shortage of workers? Offer more money. If you are offering the same money as everyone else in your area, you'll get the same recycled employees as everyone else in your area. You can place all the ads you want, wherever you want, won't make a difference. You gotta figure out why there is a shortage of qualified help. Might want to look outside the industry. The basics of painting are simple enough to teach someone. (not saying painting is simple, just saying that you can have them making you money quickly) If they have any skill at all, you can then work with them to learn the tricks and difficult things. Good luck |

Yes you can get someone started rather quickly, but no n00b will make you money right away They are a helper (as opposed to a tech) for quite a while Even after a few months of training, practice, learning, you've still got to spend time/money babysitting, checking, redoing, etc. -if you can even send them/leave them on a job by themselves The key here is "you can then work with them to learn the tricks and difficult things." The answers are "Not if I'm looking for someone I can send to a job and have it done, right and quick...now" "If I had the time to teach/babysit a n00b, I wouldn't need the extra help" Not that it's not a good idea, but it would be a significant investment in money and time ....usually a good tech's time, you don't want the iffy/so-so/slacker tech teaching the n00b

Re: Need Workers!!
slick,
don't miss my point. what is the alternative? if they are not finding help, after looking forever, look someplace else. The alternative is making due with what they have and reposting this in 6 months. I understand you won't take someone off the street and make them a competent, professional painter. But they don't seem to be able to find any competent, professional painters where they are looking, so..... |

It will take an investment Personally, I think it's worth it to take someone with no baggage/bad habits and train them myself and my way But, it will not make you any money quickly

Re: Need Workers!!
Thanks for all your input. We have put out ads just about everywhere. I have also offered better money from the getgo because I am willing to pay good for good talent. I think most of the talent is taken up. The two workers that i have now are both newbies and one could probably learn to be decent but the other is becoming a waste of time and money.
Neither of them is making me money that is for sure. This is why I have been looking for some experience around here. I dont have the time to train, babysit, whatever you want to call it. I am getting behind big time and starting to stress out. ya know. Just hoping someone turns up soon! teetorbilt..I am sure you would much rather stay were you are at. We are freezing here. Even had snow in early october. |

Re: Need Workers!!
Well if you got adds everywhear in paintstores and such, and still no responce, time to go out and steal some workers, or at least give it a shot, go up to working crews, and talk to them about comming on board. My guys tell me other companys are always comming on my job sights trying to get them to work for them. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
I have a question, when you say you cant find workers, does that mean you cant find good ones, or you cant find anyone period??? I have found it takes going thruogh about twenty painters before you find a good one. I also have found that the good ones seem to know other good ones. So remember slow to hire quick to fire goodluck dave mac |
