Nathan - Something's Wrong

Nathan, I think there must be something wrong with the people that you have attracted to your BB, or they have found themselves. I mean most of them seem to be decent folk! They also seem to agree with each other from time to time and even generate a synergistic sort of aura to the place. Even when I read opposing views, they still seem to treat the other person with respect.

There is certainly something wrong with this type of BB. I mean I have searching for, finding, and posting on painter boards since 1996 or so, I think. And I have NEVER seen people treat each other as they do here. I can sort of remember my first few posts back in the day, and EVERY one of them was attacked by somone, somehow. I didn't take it personally, cuz it happenend to just about everyone. At least if you didn't join the "behind the scenes clique's" that grew out of them.

Shoot, for almost 10 years now, I was told that it was MY fault if I ever got pissed at someone. I needed thicker skin. I almost believed them, too. I mean if you offer someone a piece of advice and in return you get stabbed in the back, ridiculed, lied about, and insinuated of being a crook, I guess you are supposed to just laugh it off. Actually, I did learn to do that after about 5 years, but I have also told a couple of them exactly why they should be on their knees! IT's really the only way for them to look better.

Nathan, I have already thanked you for providing such a great place to visit. Now I am thanking all of the participants that keep it real, honest, and disagree with one another as grown-ups. Thanks people, and HOW REFRESHING!

There are even people here that pay subs and sometimes piecework. For the first 7-8 years that I mentioned one of those two things, Ifelt like I was being pelted with rotten tomatoes by toothless wonders that thought I was out to change the world they live-in. It wasn't until the last year or 2 that a FEW of the people that disagreed with me about those things for the previous 7-8 years, actually started to at least look at the possibilities.

I actually enjoyed the fact, that I was different than most others, but when people would lie and do whatever they could to make me look bad for the simple reason of making themselves look correct, That would really piss me off. But gentlemenly disagreements have always been a good thing.

It is just that this BB is almost totally opposite to any other BB that I hav been exposed to. Here, 95% of the posts, are of a gown-up nature, whther people are in agreemnt or opposed. All I have ever seen before was 95% cildish posts, with 5% that were worth anything.

Thanks Nathan, and EVERYONE that visits and contributes to this BB. It's nice to learn in peace, and amongst adults.

Regards,
Paul

Ah shut up Paul, you don't know what the h.ll you're talking about!
Just kidding. But that's what some other BB's would say. I agree with you totally, and I really enjoy being here even though everybody seems to love those stupid smilies!!

Paul,

Its always great to read your posts... they are always positive and/or FULL of great information...

I also agree with you about this BB...

The other great thing about this BB is that IF someone is causing unnessasary problems... they dont last long...in fact...they are totally wiped out...and gone without a trace...

I think its great that they run this BB like that...its very well managed.

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Nathan - Something's Wrong

Ron,

RFLMAO!! I haven never been crazy about "smilies" either, but those two that I used to bracket my thoughts of how some of the childish poster's could look better, well.................

I really should apologize, but the guy that I posted about on another BB had been like a tiny little rock in my sock, for the entire 10 years or so that I had been posting. I finally had enough and got kind of nasty with him. Picture those two "smilies" that I used in that sentence where I described the guy, on their knees in front of me and they might not appear to be smiling any more! RFLMAO again!

That is what happens with people eith my personality type. We hold things in (in this case for 10 years!) and then one day, we just go "postal", or "explode" in some other way. Get it, EXPLODE?

Out,
Paul

Most def! Whoever is doing the patroling, deleting, and other general moderating is also doing an EXCELLENT job! Thanx!

Man, I really think that "Muhamed" might be able to have the muntain come to him, if this keeps up. Muhamed is all of the people that contribute to this BB. Whether they own it, patrol it, contribute to it, or even oppose every post as an adult. All of that positive and thought provoking free flowing information is going to make A LOT of people, RICH. RICH in a lot of ways, not just monetarilly.

Now if we could just attract some women! I mean, I am happily married, but the opposite sex can often provoke some interesting thoughts and theories. Where can we find some! Never mind, I'll just impersonate one!

Paul,

"a tiny little rock in my sock"

Painters can be poets right?
First Slickshift, now Paul.

What is even more interesting is that there are disagreements.
They are allowed to exist untill things get too nasty or offensive,
then the moderators come in and clean-up.
I think the negative people are a very small minority but somehow
allowed to post in other boards.
The great majority of contractors are good people with sometimes
differing opinions.

Re: Nathan - Something's Wrong

IMHO there is nothing wrong with opposing views and a good pie fight is good for business, just check the numbers on those threads. People tune in.

I'm a big advocate of first amendment rights and, generally, allow threads to follow through to their own conclusion. Most eventually sort themselves out.

Re: Nathan - Something's Wrong

Paul,

You are absolutly right! This is a great board, the first contractor-related board I have actually taken the time to join, as well a participte in to any extent. And the sheer amount of people that are on it at any one time can attest to that. I am still amazed that even at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, there have been 30, 40, or more people on the site.

There is very little flaming, the moderators do a super job of keeping the spammers out, and the advice that is given comes from people that have actually "been there - done that"... Not like some boards that have a bunch of wanna-bes that sound like the only experiance they have is watching their uncle or neighbor do something.

I have been in this business 20+ years full time, and I look forward to reading the new posts and looking at the various viewpoints on different situations and ways of doing things around the country. And I will be the first to admit, there is hardly a week that goes by that I don't learn something new from someone. You cant' beat that!

Thanks Paul, I really appreciate your comments.
Its funny you should post this now. I was just at the 7/11 next to the cafe we ate a couple of years back and thinking how glad I was that you finally joined this site. Your knowledge is very welcome here.

Bottom line, we have great moderators here who donate their time to making this board great. I'm not sure I can take any credit for that. I hope everyone appreciates them the way I do.

I'm here because it's more sane that my day to day. Whenever I feel that I need a break I check in, it's also better than most anything on TV. Ol#2's watching the Academy Awards tonight, just a bunch of multi-millionaires patting each other on the back IMHO.

Yes, Paul. We all love this place for that and many other reasons. You'll notice most of us are online almost all night long....I assume many are like me and are on and off all night long between doing other things. I prolly pop in once every hour or so....

Re: Nathan - Something's Wrong

Yup I have to agree. I have seen many forums start out with good intentions only to degenerate into complete garbage. One thing I have learned is a forum is only as good as it's moderators. It is absolutely refreshing to be a part of this one, where (most people) act like adults and give others an ounce of respect. I think any straying from this should be squashed quickly and completely, or it can have a nasty, long term snowballing effect that can bring down even the most well meaning forum.

Re: Nathan - Something's Wrong

I agree, this is a very good board. While I like a good fight on politics, cars, women and religion, it is a pleasure to be able to discuss subjective questions about our work without getting personal.

Thank you for providing this service.
