Nail hole issue.. any suggestions?

When I fill nail holes on trim, I usually use DAP Painters Putty. I find that after how ever many coats of paint I put on, I can still see a little divet from where the holes were filled. I have used wood filler then sanded flush. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or products that they use that they find better and more helpful. Thank you!

Fast 'N Fill

I like DAP "Fast 'N Fill". Red Devil makes something like it. If the tub feels empty when you pick it up? That's the stuff! It actually swells a bit when it dries, and you can sand it smooth.

I actually like the hard to sand putty. If you pack the hole full, there will be no dimple when it dries. With the hard putty, you do not have to worry about sanding it below flush either. Of course, it is more work to sand, but if you pack it just right so a little extra is above the nail hole, it is not too bad.

I've used different lightweight spackles, and they do indeed seem to swell after filling, but they also sand down so easily that you seem to get the divits anyway. Then theres the fact that they are so porous that the paint "burns out" and you need several coats to get an even sheen. Lately I've tried the woodtoned latex wood fillers like Minwax. It takes longer to apply and more work to sand down, but I get better end results.

There's really only one product that is above the rest...

Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty. I use the tin top of the can to mix up small batches with a putty knife. Then I use my finger or putty knife to fill in holes in trim etc. It dries rock hard in 20 minutes. Only need to hit lightly with some sandpaper. It'll come out smooth. Can be used prior to priming as it won't shrink. Available at HD / Lowes / lumber yards.

I can't yet post a url so search for website or images of the product.
