Moving And Taking The Business With You...

Have you guys ever moved to a different state and kept your business going? How did you do? Did you paint for a company while you got your self established?

Basically, my wife and I are planning a move. I am leaning towards picking up a foreman/supervisor position for a local painter or sub-ing for a company while I get used to the area and can establish advertising and reputation. What do you all think? What would you all do?

I've moved a couple times. I opted to keep plugging and live off savings. About the time i'm broke and down to one bag of rice, it usually picks up. Dont do it my way!

Have you looked at the license requirements in new state? I was amazed at the difference in requirements I started a new thread to get more input, I wonder what kind of effect it has on # of painters in an area when a license is easy to get?

We're moving from CT to PA. I am in the process of checking out license requirements. I dont think I could handle Florida~a culmination of elderly waiting to die and 170mph winds, doesnt really appeal to me.

We do mostly interiors here in Maine and work the most in Winter!, but thats cause most the home owners have left for the season....to Florida! Nice and quiet painting!

Dear Brush-God....

I paint outside in the spring and summer.
I paint inside in the fall and winter.

This is the going trend these days.

I can strongly recommend working for someone else for a few in the new area

lol!
We normally work in the Hudson Valley area of New York but in the slow periods of winter we want to do work in Florida. I'm in the process of trying to establish that as I type this up. Glad everyone is talking about what the requirements are by state because this was one of my concerns before heading down there. Good luck with your move.
