Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
doing a deck for some lady got talked into doing the railing also which i normally wouldnt do since im not a painter its not my field of expetise. stripped old finish all way down applied acylic primer and 100% acrylic paint tiny rust spots started to bleed out but other than that the finish coat stuck good. so i put killz latex 2 coats and then 2 coats of same olympic 100% acrylic paint. was 90 degrees out that day by the time i got done doing one railing the primer was dried when i started the other one. and same thing with applying the acrylic paint. a day later rain and been raining. now i know i didnt miss any spots to let water or moisture soak in and the finish is failing all way down the horizontals tiny little blister bubbles all over it. what and how can i fix this? what would have made the finish fail? could something from the kills bled out cause was so humid out and hot that day? can i sand out the blisters and repaint? should i stick with the acylic or put on and oil based paint over the acylic? i need some advice from a pro painter. please help greatly appreciated.

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
i would have hit the whole thing with some rust-mort, or por-15. both of these products will adhere to and stop any rust, leaving you a paintable surface with no rust problems...

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
Acrylic primer wasn't a good choice for this application. And Kilz latex is just plain crap. Strip off the paint, and apply a high-quality oil/alkyd metal primer, like this one.
Top coat with an exterior oil finish or DTM acrylic. |

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
All of the above ^^^
Rather than POR as fastg60 says, I prefer Eastwood Co.'s Rust Encapsulator as it does not need top coating That may be a bit much if it's a little cheap project The BM metal primer etc. may be a better choice for this one |

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
Strip, kill the rust with Ospho, scratch with a green 3M pad and use an oil based paint like Rustoleum. Problem solved.

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
Latex primer has water in it... your aplying water to metal to start with
.. bad combination.... Oil primer is the only way to go. and if it's a small railing why paint? Just buy a few cans of rustoleum? reprep first... |

Re: Metal Railing Finish Failed Problem?
This wasn't a galvanized railing that had rusted in some spots was it?
PS KILLZ= $15 a gallon at wal-mart that says it all
